3rd Grade Assessments Dear Awesome Teacher, Ideally, words shouldn’t be taught in isolation. Yes, initially introduce new word families, make lists, and help your students understand the spelling patterns for that week. But make sure to provide reading materials that use those words in context, and to give your students many opportunities to write the words in context as well! If you are interested in supplementing this packet, I have a matching Word Work packet with SHORT STORIES and more activities that help you do just that. Frogs, Fairies, and Lesson Plans © CLICK! The Answ er Keys include the words AND sentences with the words in context. I recommend reading the sentences in advance in case you want to make any changes. I’d print the full set of answer keys, staple them, and keep them for the whole year. Dictating Sentences I always ask my students to put their pencils down and listen to the “story” that each sentence tells. Then, we say the sentence together and count how many words they’ll have to write. Next, I say the words one at a time. And finally, I read the sentence once more. Grading The Test I count each word as 1 point, even in the full sentences that I dictate.. The Answ er Keys list how many words each test has so you don’t have to count them. ü You can create a rubric based on how many incorrect words equal a certain grade. For example: -0 to -2 = A, -3 to -5 = B, etc. ü You can determine the percentage of correct words. For example, if a student correctly spells 19 out of 23 words, 19➗23 = 0.83 which is a B..
