Phoenix pendant tutorial.
You will need…
• 1.2mm wire (16awg) 1 x 7” (18cm) referred to as frame wire
• 0.8mm wire (20awg) 1 x 11” (28cm) 1 x 3” (8cm) (I’ll refer to
these wires as base wires)
• 20g half-round wire 1 x 3” (8cm) or just use a little weaving
wire
• 0.315mm weaving wire (28g) 250cm (I’ve wound mine onto
a bobbin, but you can cut lengths as you go if you prefer)
• Small bead 6mm (or a similar size, for the eye)
• Jump ring 8mm outside measurement (or any size you have
handy)
Tools…
Page
2
• Your favourite pliers (mine are tweezer nose pliers)
• Round nose pliers
• Wire cutters (and old or heavy-duty cutters for the thicker
wire)
• Nylon pliers (optional) I like to use these to straighten wires
and compress and flatten weaves
• Bail pliers (for shaping the thicker wire)
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Cut your wires to the
lengths mentioned above.
Take your thicker frame
wire (1.2mm, 16awg).
Find the centre point and
grip it with pliers.
Bend the wire over the
pliers.
Page
3
Squeeze the bent part with
your pliers until it’s
completely flat.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
As shown here.
Hold the wire like this, so
the bent part is side on.
Grip the bent section of
wire and pull the wires
apart, forward and back.
Page
4
So you have this shape (the
bent section at the bottom
is still side on).
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Holding it sideways, grip
and shape the top wire
first.
So, bend the top wire over.
And then scoop it back up
as I have here, so you have
an ‘S’ type bend.
Page
5
Then, take the bottom wire
and bend that around like
this, let the wires cross over
each other.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Bend this wire over, like
this.
Cut that wire, angle the
cutters like this.
Then, cut the other wire,
also angling the cutters.
File those cut wires into a
point, you can leave this
step out if you prefer.
Page
6
I’m using a glass nail file,
you can use any file you
like.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
File the other wire too (it
just finishes off the wires
nicely).
Then take your bail pliers.
I’m using this size, the 2nd
smallest.
Page
7
And curl that wire into
quite a large curl.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Then curl the other wire
the same way, so both curls
curl in the same direction.
Take your time with the
shapes.
That’s our frame
complete!
Next, grip the bent tip.
I’m bending that bent part
over and down to form a
beak-type shape.
Page
8
I cannot emphasise enough how
important it is to just take your time
with every move, bend or weave. Just
take a second to stop and look, is that
how you want it to look, can you
imagine it looking better? Take it
slow… and enjoy the process.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Next take your small bead
and a short length of base
wire (0.8mm, 20awg)
In the picture, I’m using
half-round wire, but this
part needs more strength.
So I recommend using
base wire instead.
Position the beads centrally
on the wire, position the
wire here.
Bend the bottom of the
wire around the frame wire
a few times, use your
round nose pliers.
Page
9
Then, bend the top of the
wire around the top of the
frame.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Cut the excess wire at both
ends.
Press the ends flat, bending
the wire around the frame
wire with pliers to finish it
off.
So you have this (only your
bead wire is thicker than
mine).
Page
10
Take a short length of halfround wire (or weaving
wire).
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Wrap a few times around
one of the frame wires.
Then wrap twice around
both wires.
Then a few wraps around a
single wire.
Page
11
Cut the ends and press
them flat with pliers.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Next, take one of the
0.8mm (20awg) lengths of
wire and find the centre
point.
Grip that centre point with
pliers.
Bend the wire over the
pliers.
Page
12
Squeeze the wire
completely flat with pliers.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Grip the bent end with
pliers and pull the wires
out, one forward, one
back.
So you have this shape, as
we did with the frame wire.
Take the other length of
base wire.
Page
13
Grip the centre point with
pliers.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Bend that wire into a ‘V’
shape.
Position the ‘V’ here.
Reshape the angles of the
wires until they meet nicely
like this, take your time.
Take your weaving wire.
Reel off 100cm (roughly)
and start weaving using the
wire to the right of that
point.
Page
14
So now, as you work you
will have a nice length of
weaving wire at the
beginning of the weave (for
later).
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Take the ‘V’ wire and wrap
5 times.
Slide the wraps down to
here.
Position the ‘V’ wire next
to the bent wire.
We’ll now attach those 2
wires together.
Page
15
Wrap twice around both
wires, bringing the wire up
between those 2 wires.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Then wrap 5 times around
the top wire again.
Wrap twice around both
wires, then twice around
the top wire.
Turn the piece and we’ll
weave the other side.
Page
16
Taking the tail end of wire
you left earlier.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Wrap once around both
wires, then once around
the bottom wire.
Repeat that.
Carefully position the
weave against the frame.
Your weave needs to reach
where the frame wires
cross, so I need to add a
few more repeats.
Page
17
Added repeats.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Turn the piece around.
It’s a little tricky to hold the
weave accurately next to
the frame.
Holding it the best you
can, bend the wire over as
I have here to follow the
frame shape.
Then bend the other wire
to follow, leaving a gap
between the two.
Page
18
Remove the frame for
now. Next, we’re working
on those 2 curved wires.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
*Take your weaving wire
over the opposite wire.
Wrap around that wire.
Then go back over the first
wire.
And wrap around that
wire**.
Page
19
So that’s your repeat (from
* to **) going over the
opposite wire and around
it.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Try not to let the wires
come together as you
weave.
It will start looking
something like this.
Keep pushing that weave
together as you work.
Re-position your weave
against the frame every
now and then to make sure
the wires haven’t moved.
Page
20
Keep adding repeats and
keep pushing your weave
together.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Until your weave reaches
the cross in the frame.
Then wrap about 5 times
around the outer wire.
The weave will sit here
against the frame.
Page
21
So the coiled wire is here,
along the top (pictured
upside down).
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Take the other wire from
that weave (the not coiled
one) and take it around the
lower frame wire.
Pull/wriggle the wire all the
way around the frame wire
as I have here.
This will hold the weave in
place.
Page
22
Next, take the coiled wire.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
And bend it around to
follow the top curl of the
frame.
Wrap twice around that
coiled wire and the top curl
of the frame wire.
Then wrap 5 times around
the coiled wire.
Bring the wire away from
the frame, creating a small
space between the wires.
Page
23
Wrap twice around the two
wires.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Wrap 5 times around the
single wire.
Shape the wire around a
bit more.
Leave that for now.
Take the other wire from
the weave.
Bring it up the back of the
frame.
Page
24
Leave this for now.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Shape the bottom weave
against the frame, then pull
the wires away.
Bend the wires through the
centre of the frame.
Bending the ends of the wires
first can make this a little easier.
Bend the end then gently lead
the rest of the wire through so
you don’t misshape it too
much.
Post them through the left
side of the bead.
Page
25
Then, reshape the weave if
you need to.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Holding the weave in place
against the frame, bend
those wires down at the
back (upside-down view).
Looking at the back.
I’m going to undo a few
weave repeats, so they end
here (push the weave
together first).
Finish with 3 wraps around
one of the wires.
Cut the weaving wire.
Page
26
Leave this for now.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Looking at the front, go
back to the top wire.
Holding all the other wires
in place so they don’t
move, curve that wire over
to the left.
Then bring it over the
weave.
Shape it around to follow
the weave.
Page
27
Leave that for now.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Let’s shape the beak.
Take your bail pliers (or
round-nose pliers).
Grip the bent tip of the
wire and bend it down into
a little curve.
Next, take that bare wire
from earlier, take it down
over the bottom weave and
bring it up the back.
A closer look at that wire.
Leave that for now.
Page
28
Going back to that top
curved wire.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Taking care to keep the
gap between the wires,
wrap twice around both
wires.
Then wrap 5 times around
the single wire.
Push the wraps together to
keep it all nice and tidy.
Page
29
Cut the weaving wire,
flatten down the end with
pliers.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Then, take that wire
around.
And down.
Leave that for now.
Holding the whole piece so
the wires don’t move, take
this wire and post it
through to the front, next
to the bead.
This will secure it in place
around the bottom weave.
Page
30
Straighten the wire with
nylon pliers if you need to.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Take a moment to just
have a look at the wire
shaping here and see if
there are any little changes
you may want to make at
this point.
Push this wire up a little if
it needs it.
Check the shape of the
beak, does it sit well against
the frame?
Page
31
So far, you have something
like this.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Next, we’ll take this wire.
Turn the piece upsidedown.
Grip the wire here with
pliers.
Bend the wire forward,
over the pliers.
Page
32
Squeeze the bend until it’s
completely flat.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Front view.
Grip the bend of that wire,
at the tip.
And pull the wire down to
here.
Then, holding the wire the
best you can.
Page
33
Scoop the wire around.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Like this.
Bring the wire around like
this.
Top view, so you can see
that tight bend in the wire.
Page
34
Shape the wire, pulling that
tight bend down again, if
you need to (mine moved).
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Then when you’re happy
with the shape, bring the
wire over to follow the
other wire.
Holding it all in place as
you do so.
Bring to wire over to the
beak.
Then, holding the wire in
place at the bead, take that
wire out and through to the
back.
Page
35
Bending the end first, then
post it through to the right
of the bead.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Gently pull that wire
through, taking care not to
misshape it (still holding
the front wire in place).
So it goes through here.
Keep an eye on the rest of
that wire, it may move.
Make sure you can see the
whole wire and it sits nicely
next to that previous wire,
you don’t want it hiding
behind it.
Page
36
Take that top wire and
bend it around the frame
wire (back view).
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Pull it all the way around.
Keep checking on the front
wire shaping and adjust if
you need to.
Front view.
Page
37
Back view.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Cut the wire when you’re
happy with the shape.
Press the wire around the
frame wire with pliers.
I’ve decided to curve that
bent section here with
round nose pliers to give it
a bit more shape.
Page
38
So now it looks like this.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Turn the piece upsidedown and we’ll work on
those 2 wires next.
Bending the two wires at
the same time, bring them
over the front.
Turn the piece up the right
way.
Bring them around to the
right.
Page
39
Squeeze the wires around
the frame so they hold
better in place.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Bend those 2 wires down
and hold them in place
against the weave.
Then, bend the wires up.
Still holding the wires
against the piece, move to
the end of those wires and
bend them over, to go
through the middle of the
piece.
Push the wires through
carefully.
Page
40
Look at the wire shaping.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
When you’re happy with
the shape, hold the front
wires in place once again
and bend the wires down at
the back.
I twisted my weave a little,
so straighten that if you
need to.
So now we’re going to
finish these 2 wires.
Page
41
We’ll wrap them around
the frame here (bottom
view) just next to where
they sit behind the weave.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Take your pliers and make
a gap by wriggling the pliers
in between the weave and
the frame wire.
Cut the wires.
Using round nose pliers,
pull and bend those 2
wires around the frame,
just a little to start with.
Look at the front wires,
they may have moved.
Page
42
Adjust if you need to.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Make sure both wires sit
next to each other, go
around the eye and are
both seen from the front.
When you’re happy with
the shape, finish those
wires by pressing them with
pliers around the frame
wire, securing them in
place.
Take a moment!
Check the front wires, do
they need adjusting or
moving a little?
Page
43
Press the base of those
front wires down against
the piece.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Just look over the shaping
and make sure you’re
happy with the results.
We’re nearly finished.
Take that last wire.
Bend it around
Page
44
We’re making a little
teardrop.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Hold the teardrop in place
so it doesn’t move, then
bend the wire over to the
left.
So you have this.
Take a short length of
weaving wire.
Page
45
Wrap 3 times around that
teardrop wire.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Slide the wraps here, into
place.
Bringing the wire up at the
other side of the loop.
Pull the wire a little, then
wrap around the single
wire a few times.
Page
46
Push the wraps together to
keep it all nice and tidy.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com
Phoenix pendant tutorial.
Make sure the wraps sit
here, quite high up on the
loop.
Cut the weaving wire at
both ends.
Cut the base wire here.
Page
47
Take your round-nose
pliers.
www.kellyjonesjewellery.etsy.com

And put a small, tight curl
in that wire.
Next, take your jump ring
and add it to the lower
frame loop.
Finished!!
