Pambago, Mark Aeron T. BSA 1-1 ACTIVITY 3 One of the primary components of effectively working with persons of diverse cultural background is getting in touch with your own cultural identity, beliefs, your attitudes, and ways of relating to various groups of people in society. By increasing your own self-awareness, you can uncover hidden prejudices, which influence our reactions and interactions with others. I had this experience way back in 2017. My cousin from America went here for a month-long vacation. On that vacation, I found lots of cultural differences between Americans and Filipino. First, while we have a family outing, I was surprised that they are wearing a swimsuit on a resort, while here in the Philippines, it is mainly worn only on the beach. They are very liberal, while we tend to be more of a conservative person. In America, it is customary to work while you're a student, while here in the Philippines, it is mainly perceived that you need financial support for your studies if you're working while studying. Lastly, teens in America live separately from their parents when they attain the legal age, while here in the Philippines, even if a person has his own family, he tends to live together with his parents. Think about a setting in which you have worked/interacted with different people from various backgrounds. These differing backgrounds may have been about nationality and social class difference, religion difference, or other features, such as ethnicity. How did cultural differences and different ways of doing things according to culture become visible? List some of these. First encounter: I had this encounter with a Korean friend of my aunt, and she told me that if ever that I will have a meeting with her Korean friend, I must greet him "annyeonghaseyo" while bowing and making the right-hand gestures. It was advised to me that her Korean friend won't find it rude if ever that we have an encounter. In this case, it is evident that we, Filipinos, have a different way of greeting others, like nodding or raising eyebrows. We don't find it rude to have such gestures. It is evident that Filipinos and Koreans have different ways of greeting each other, which is part of the culture where we grew up. Second Encounter: During the wake of my grandfather in Laguna, I'm shocked that they rent a videoke while having my grandfather's wake. I find the cultural difference between Laguna and Batangas in terms of a funeral; in Batangas, we tend to be solemn during the wake. In Laguna, they're more celebrating and not eaten by sorrow. Third Encounter: In senior high, I have a Muslim classmate, and she's wearing a hijab which I find new since it's my first close encounter with a Muslim. As I know her more, I found that it is normal because they find themselves sacred and that their family should only see them. The religious difference becomes visible; there are no such norms in Roman Catholics, but Muslims find themselves as sacred and should only be seen by their family.
