Placement in Educational Institutions
Guideline for HDP Candidates
Higher education teachers have to work with schools or organizations to integrate the largely
theoretical training they offer in universities with practical application in the world of work. For
teachers, this kind of engagement helps to fill gaps in their knowledge of the world of work as it
relates to their areas of teaching and to identify community problems. School or organizational
placement also helps candidates to develop practical skills and appropriate professional values in
their field of study.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this section, a candidate will be able to

Evaluate the gap between HEIs’ training and the actual practice in schools or
organizations

Take measures to fill the identified gaps

 The teacher Sisay Geleta is a very wise and talented teacher. He graduated from Bahir
Dar University in Bachelor of Science and he has good knowledge about the course.

YES
If not, how could the teacher improve the
engagement of students?
Was there a range of activities? YES (pattern analysis, cutting and sewing) Were they
appropriate? YES
Other comments on the lesson: It was an interesting class as all the students participate their
practical activity by their teacher order and advising
How successful was the lesson? Highly successful, since it was practical What is the evidence?
I was participating on their practical work and I have photo on that
Could the lessons have been improved? NO, the lesson was interested but as it was practical,
there is no any safety even if first aid If so, how? Buy first aid and put near their workshop class

Session evaluation
Two successful things about the session and why they were successful
 Students are highly interested and eager to learn and ask questions
 Teaching with practical is more important than theoretical ,since it is more for solving
problems and saw solutions
Choose one of the objectives. Are activities clear, do they show progress, is good use made of
active learning methods; were your students on task?
 To make flat pattern for fashion design. In class, students practice skills, solve problems,
struggle with complex questions, make decisions, propose solutions, and explain ideas in
their own words through writing and discussion.
One suggestion for improvement
 Do not take risks in sewing class since it is health issue .
 Be confidence.
 Be ability to ask for help.
 Be proactivity.
 Not to complex problem-solving.
Reflections on the session:
 Reflection sessions are a fundamental component of the design of Complex Problem and
Enduring Question courses, where students are provided time outside of lecture to
connect course material to their whole selves
Reflections on the assessment methods used:
 The assessment method is 70/30 in practical and theory ration and their grading system
for students is a minimum of 74-77 is grade c. There are several things that I can reflect
on: understanding of the material and how well you understand certain concepts.

Final Reflection on School Placement
1. What did you learn from your school placement?
What I learnt from my placements is how different schools are from one another. I have
learnt a lot from the placements I have attended over 7 days in the last two weeks. It has
increased my awareness of the different types learning, teaching methods. I also think
that the firsthand knowledge and experience I have gained by attending the settings has
improved my confidence and the skills needed when working with practice. I observed
also the organization significant contribution for the community
2. What did you learn about yourself?
 I can give simple technical support
3. How will your experience on your placement change the way you teach in your
institution?
 It will good to identify the gaps
 This will be important to fulfill this gap in my lecture of lesson for the next
students.
 Therefore, the students after graduated they will not face with such challenges.
