Activity 1 Number cards Instructions Print on to card and laminate if required. These cards can then be used in a variety of ways. Using number cards only: Offer a number card (face down) to each learner. Ask them to stand in a line at the front of the room, holding the cards in number order. Alternatively, ask the learners with cards to stand randomly. The other learners have to give the commands so that the learners in the line move in the correct direction so that the order of numbers is correctly achieved (left, right...). Alter the line to a ‘queue’ format so learners’ instructions are based around in front and behind. Scatter them on the table and ask learners to sort into the right order. Using number cards and symbols: Give the + card to one learner and one number each to two learners. Ask the three learners to stand in a line to show the question they are creating. Ask the other learners to find the correct answer card. Repeat in a similar way with the – card (leads to discussion about the ‘right way round’) Scatter them on a table and ask learners to create equations.
