ENG3U - Ms. Bando Exam Format Exam Prep Sheet for “The Metaphor” - June 2023 Exam Aids ➢ You must create an essay outline based on ONE of the questions ➢ You will receive 4 essay options ➢ The exam is 1.5 hours long ➢ The intro & conclusion are the only sections written in full sentences ➢ An outline is required for the body paragraphs (point form) ➢ You may use your copy of the story and ONE sheet of notes on the exam. These will be collected June 14th for the exam ➢ Notes will be hand written and prepared in class only (notes will be taken June 13 - 14) ➢ Notes will be on an 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper double sided ➢ You may annotate the story ➢ Notes should be in point form For the essay question you choose, you are required to provide examples from the story as well as examples and insights from other literature studied this semester where applicable. You might want to spend time exploring each of the following within the story and how it compares to other texts we have read (Macbeth and Indigenous short stories) where applicable. Note: These are not the exam questions but are topics that the exam may touch on. HINT: Making POINT FORM NOTES on the following is a good idea. 🙂 1. Literary lenses that look at character mentalities and relationships. 2. Themes that are relevant in the story. 3. The role of language and how it affects identities and understandings. 4. Comparing and contrasting characters. 5. The influence of characters beliefs, motivations and actions on others 6. The significance/impact of metaphors and how characters are understood more fully through them. 7. Societal norms and how characters do/don’t fit in them. 8. Elements that you feel drive the plot and shape characters. 9. The main message of the story and how it is developed throughout the narrative piece. 10.Concepts that define the human condition such as dreams of belonging, feelings of alienation and the search for meaning.
