SUSTAINABILITY & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
In 1987, The United Nations Brundtland Commission
defined sustainability as
“Meeting the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
The three pillar of sustainability is,
• Economic
• Social
• Environmental

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY?
According to the U.N. Environment Programme,
Environmental sustainability aims to improve the quality of human life without putting
unnecessary strain on the earth's supporting ecosystems. It’s about creating an equilibrium
between consumerist human culture and the living world. We can do this by living in a way that
doesn’t waste or unnecessarily deplete natural resources.
In short, Environmental sustainability is the practice of interacting with the planet responsibly.
We do it to avoid depleting natural resources and compromising the future generation’s ability
to meet their daily needs.
WHY DO WE NEED ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY?
Environmental sustainability provides huge benefits for human health and that of all other species.
It reduces,
• Global carbon footprint
• Reduces our reliance on fossil fuels
• Other harmful energy practices.
Sustainable development encourages more responsible manufacturing and production, covering
the industrial side of waste and pollution. It also encourages companies, industries, and
governments to make decisions based on long-term consequences, rather than taking the easiest,
cheapest option.
Environmental sustainability prevents nature from being used as an inexhaustible source of
resources and ensures it’s protection and efficient natural resource allocation.

BENEFITS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY?
The benefits of environmental sustainability are,
•
•
•
•
•
We can protect ecosystems
We can continue to enjoy nature as it is
We can protect endangered species
Less pollution in the cities will result in better respiratory health for all
It could halt or reverse the effects of global warming
For businesses, the benefits are:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Reduce energy usage and thus save money
Produce less waste
It can produce less pollution
Improve brand image
Attract and keep better quality investors, employees, and shareholders
We can rest easy at night knowing we’re not damaging the planet for future generations
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The sustainable development goals (sdgs) or global goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals
designed to be a "shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the
future“.
The sdgs were set up in 2015 by the united nations general assembly (UN-GA) and are intended to be
achieved by 2030. They are called the 2030 agenda. Among the 17 sdgs, 8 points are related to the
environmental area and they are,
Goal 06: Clean water and sanitation
Goal 07: Affordable and clean energy
Goal 10: Reduced inequality
Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities
Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
Goal 13: Climate action
Goal 14: Life below water
Goal 15: Life on land
POLICIES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Removing distortions
Proving property rights
Penalty for polluters
Regulations of technology use in some industries
EIA for public Expenditure
Removing impediments to action (counteracting political pressure , improving
information, involving local people)
Implementation of 3R’s, (This rule is part of the waste hierarchy which is a process used to protect the

CONFERENCES ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
History on sustainable development
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Economic Development is programs, policies or activities that seek to improve the economic
well-being and quality of life for a community.
Increased access to opportunities created by economic growth for existing and future
residents.
Development indicators
• GDP ( Gross Domestic Product) per capita – growing development population
• Modern transportation
• GDI (Gender Development Index)
• GEM (Gender Empowerment Measure)
Economic development has a direct relationship with the environment.
Which SDGs are related to the economic area?
Goal 1: No poverty
Goal 2: Zero Hunger
Goal 3: Good health and well-being
Goal 4: Quality education
Goal 5: Gender equality and women's empowerment
Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Goal 10: Reduced inequality
Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities
Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
The natural environment and the economy
The natural environment plays an important role in supporting economic activity.
It contributes:
directly, by providing resources and raw materials such as water, timber and
minerals that are required as inputs for the production of goods and services;
and
indirectly, through services provided by ecosystems including carbon
sequestration, water purification, managing flood risks, and nutrient cycling.
Environment as Part of the Economic System
Continue………..
Natural resources are vital for securing economic growth and development, not
just today but for future generations.
The relationship between economic growth and the environment is complex.
Economic growth raising standards of living and improving quality of life across
the world.
 But it has also resulted in the depletion of natural resources and the
degradation of ecosystems.
Continue…………
For example, the increase in CO2levels in the atmosphere as a result of human
activity means that the world is already locked into some climate change, and
faces a major challenge to keep global temperature rises to below two degrees.
In the context of environmental resources more generally, the Millennium
Ecosystem Assessment (2003) found that 15 out of the 24 ecosystems services it
examined were being degraded or used unsustainably, and the use and
consumption of natural resources such as minerals and metals continues at an
increasing pace.
Relationship between economic growth and the environment
• Environmental Kuznets Curve
ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY
• Economic sustainability refers to practices that support the long-term economic
development of a company or nation while also protecting environmental, social, and
cultural elements.
• Today, economic sustainability is a goal that very few organizations achieve, despite a
fairly universal understanding of what types of business practices (e.g., burning of
fossil fuels, creating food waste etc.) contribute to climate change.
• Economic sustainability is important_
 The longevity of the global economy
 The preservation of human life
 Unrealized discoveries
