MAAN Final Essay
Love is a very special feeling that not everyone can experience. Most people will take
ages to fall in love, however some may fall in love very quickly. In the 1958 play Much Ado
about Nothing, written by William Shakespeare, two couples fall in love and get married. One
couple is Claudio and Hero who struggle with the deception of a man named Don John who
tricked the couple into questioning their loyalty. The other couple being
The main theme of Much Ado about Nothing is love. “I do not love nothing in the world so
well as you: is that not strange?” (Benedick, II. III, 87-88). This quote not only illustrates
Benedick’s affection for Beatrice, but also suggests that his love for her is based on genuine
admiration. Shakespeare suggests that true love is based on mutual respect, admiration, and
understanding, rather than looks and possessions.
The main theme of the play is love. “And I pray thee now, tell me for which of my own bad
parts didst thou first fall in love with me?” (Beatrice III.II, 55-56). This quote highlights the idea
that love can come out very unexpectedly and not based on traditional qualities like attraction.
Shakespeare suggests that love is very complex and mysterious as he plays with different ways
that love can manifest.
Shakespeare explored the theme of love in 1598. He best-envisioned love to be genuine with
care and affection rather than being in love with someone just because of how they look and
what they own. Much Ado about Nothing is still relevant today because the themes are timeless.
Love isn’t just the main theme of the play, there are many more. The play explores the

complexities of human relationships like the joys and struggles with love. This theme continues
to resonate with people today as many struggle with these issues in their lives.
