THE GODFATHER’S SPEECH
Line 1 (at 00:50 seconds): How did things ever get so far?... I don’t know. Tattaglia lost a
son, I lost a son. We’re quits, and if Tattaglia agrees, then I’m willing to let things go on
the way they were before.
Line 2 (at 01:39 minutes): When did I ever refuse a recommendation? All of you know me
here. When did I ever refuse? Except one time, and why? Because I believe this drugs
business is going to destroy us in years to come.
Line 3 (at 04:18 minutes): You talk about vengeance. Is vengeance going to bring your son
back to you, or my boy to me? I forgot the vengeance of my son; but I have selfish
reasons:
Line 4 (at 04:36 minutes): My younger son… was forced to leave this country because of
this Sollozo business. All right, then I have to make arrangements to bring him back his
safety, clear of all this false charges. But I’m a superstitious man, and if some unlucky
accident shall have fall on him; if he shall get shot on the street by a police officer; or if he
shall hang himself in his jail cell; or if he is stroked by a bolt of lightning, then I’m going to
blame some of the people in this room. And that I do not forgive.
Line 5 (at 05:22 minutes): But, that aside, let me say that I swear, on the souls of my
grandchildren, that I will not be the one to break the peace we’ve made here today.
DISCURSO DE EL PADRINO
Línea 1 (a los 00:50 segundos): ¿Cómo llegaron las cosas tan lejos?... No lo sé. Tattaglia
perdió un hijo, yo perdí un hijo. Estamos a mano, y si Tattaglia está de acuerdo, entonces
estoy dispuesto a dejar que las cosas sigan como antes.
Línea 2 (a los 01:39 minutos): ¿Cuándo rechacé alguna vez una recomendación? Todos
ustedes me conocen aquí. ¿Cuándo me negué? Excepto una vez, ¿y por qué? Porque creo
que este negocio de las drogas nos va a destruir en los próximos años.
Línea 3 (a los 04:18 minutos): Hablas de venganza. ¿Va a devolverte la venganza a tu hijo,
o a mí al mío? Olvidé la venganza de mi hijo; pero tengo razones egoístas:

asunto de Sollozo. Muy bien, entonces tengo que hacer arreglos para traerlo de vuelta a

desafortunado accidente le cayera encima; si un oficial de policía le dispara en la calle; o si
se ahorca en su celda de la cárcel; o si lo parte un rayo, entonces voy a culpar a algunos de
