Coaching relates to Connecting, Outcome, Awareness, Course and Highlights. There are many similarities and differences between coaching and counseling including code of ethics and client confidentiality. Both strive for asking powerful questions, active listening and gaining trust of the client. Life coaching focuses on the present moment and establishing a positive coach/client relationship. The summary, personal response and application section will include key points of this book, strengths and weaknesses and any action steps taken to pursue a journey in the helping profession. The goal of the model is to provide encouraging conversations that will allow the client to reach several targets or goals that can product insight, learning and positive forward movement (Webb, 2019, p. 28). These models are represented throughout the book providing awareness and detail to each model as it correlates to the coaching experience. Webb introduces the book with Coaching Mindsets. This area entails having the right mindset when dealing with clients and the power behind asking meaningful, open-ended questions and engaging in active listening (Webb, 2019). This requires less advice giving, as most are inclined to give, and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through the coach/client relationship to help establish trust and growth. While advice may be often welcomed, coaching helps to bring the focus back to the client and allows them to reflect on possible solutions through their own self-discovery (Webb, 2019). The first part of the COACH model is “Connect”. Connecting is done at each session with the client to help build trust and re-establish a rapport that was developed from the previous session if more than one visit has taken place (Webb, 2019, p. 41). Engaging with the client and asking them how they are doing allows for further communication with the client on any current issues or concerns that may have arose since the last session. As coaches, it is imperative to be empathetic, so clients know they are genuinely cared for and supported. The second term to the COACH model is “Outcome”. Outcome helps identify what the nature of the session will entail by asking the client what they want to achieve during that meeting (Webb, 2019). When asking exploring questions, this may help the client to focus on topics that are manageable given the amount of time provided for the session (Webb, 2019). It provides a clear understanding to the coach of what the client is wanting, and they can work together to achieve the desired results (Webb, 2019, p. 52). Having something specific to focus on helps eliminate any chances of the conversation being redirected, and it also allows the conversation to measured against the goals that were set for that session (Webb, 2019). The third piece to the COACH model is “Awareness”. The primary goal of awareness is for the client to develop new insights and perspectives on their situations (Webb, 2019, p. 67). This can be done by the coach asking powerful, open-ended questions that helps raise awareness and generate new thought processes that will help establish growth and further options for exploring (Webb, 2019). It is important in this area for coaches to refrain from advice giving or placing their opinions on the client as this can cause the client to become defensive and feel judged; as coaches, it is their job to help develop, not fix the client (Webb, 2019). “Course” is the fourth term in the COACH model. When coaches possess good listening skills and use powerful questions in their dialogue with the client, they are ready then to help the client in creating action steps (Webb, 2019, p. 92). It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that action steps are dveloped, and it leads the client to their desired goal (Webb, 2019). When creating action steps, it is important that they are clear, measurable, attainable, relevant, and completed on a set date (Webb, 2019, p. 105). This process is known as SMART. During this phase, the client provides feedback on what they have learned from their coaching experience (Webb, 2019). Coaches can ask questions to the client that will help the client reflect and think about what was beneficial to them during their coaching sessions. This is one of the differences from counseling to coaching as counselors are the ones who reiterate what the client is telling them whereas in coaching, the client communicates from their perspective. The final chapter of this book focused on the next steps for coaches. There are several ways to learn about becoming a coach. Some of those ways include learning from books and attending workshops (Webb, 2019). Having the right mindset and training will help develop skills and provide tools that will help gain proficiency in the field. Personal Response This book really provided some great insight on how to become a coach. I appreciated all the examples that the book provided so I could further understand the material and how to build a positive coach/client relationship. The use of the COACH model is a great tool and it provides instructions to help facilitate powerful conversations between the coach and client. It was easy to follow, and I believe this is a great source that will help coaches build on their skills. One thing that I found challenging when reading this book is that I often found myself comparing what I have learned in my counseling courses to what was provided in this book. Both focus on asking meaningful questions and establishing trust with their clients, but coaching focuses on goal setting, the present moment and moving ahead. Counselors who work with clients deal with certain topics like past issues and trauma, problematic behavior, mental disorders, and healing is a primary focus. I believe this is something I can do now while I am still going to school, but I cannot help but wonder what this would look like once I am working towards being fully licensed and after. I can research this, of course, and find out what the requirements are and any possible conflicts that could arise in the future. Application Since coaching is something of interest to me and has been for some time, now would be a great time to apply some measurable action steps in making this a career option in the near future. First, I would look at the current skills that I have and how I already apply them to my everyday life. It is amazing to see how much coaching is done without having a title to go behind your name. Since I am someone who likes to know people’s life stories, this would be a great opportunity to further develop my active listening skills and utilize the COACH model when dealing with friends, family and co-workers. Currently, my aunt is going through different courses of action to settle the estate of my great-grandmother which has been going on for some time now. While this process has been challenging for her, this would be a great opportunity to speak with her on her current action steps and ask questions that could possibly lead to further discovery that she has not yet thought of (Webb, 2019). This will not only enhance and further develop my own coaching skills. but this may help her develop increased critical thinking skills. Another action step I can take is looking at the different certification programs that will allow me to become certified in this occupation. Webb (2019, p. 176) recommends obtaining an International Coach Federation (ICF) coaching certificate. There are three levels of coaching This study source was downloaded by 100000764787720 from CourseHero.com on 06-05-2023 13:43:28 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/76073161/Webb-Book-Review-docx/ KEITH WEBB BOOK REVIEW 7 certifications through ICF that include Associate Certified Coach, Professional Certified Coach and Master Certified Coach (Webb, 2019). Each level increases in how many hours are required for coaching instruction, increased hours of practice and the same amount of feedback time with a qualified coach (Webb, 2019). While the information may seem overwhelming with my current work and school load, this at least provides me with information on what is required to become an effective coach and I can create steps to help achieve this goal while trying to maintain work/life balance.
