PEE paragraph
Point
Evidence
Explanation
Objective : To be able to use the PEE
technique to analyse texts
Why do we use PEE?
• Reading is assessed by looking at 5 aspects of a
piece of writing. These are:
• Understand and select information and use of
evidence
• Interpret evidence ( explain the meaning)
• Text structure and organisation
• Writer’s use of language
• Writer’s purpose and effect
So…
Point
Evidence
Explanation
• PEE gives you a structured way of covering these
aspects.
• Using PEE will help you get a better level in
reading.
• It proves you understand and can write about
what you have read.
Identify the point, evidence and
explanation.
In pairs, look at the paragraph below and
decide what is the Point, Evidence and
Explanation. When you’re done, write this
out in the correct order and label it in your
copybooks:
‘I tried not to breathe, not to smell him.’
Even though Sam is helping Tom, he doesn’t
want to smell the horrible smell coming from
him. Sam thinks that Tom smells awful.
Identify the point, evidence and
explanation.

The author depicts/(Louis Sachar presents)
Camp Green lake as a dangerous and a hostile
place to live in.
This is shown when the writer mentions that,
‘But you don’t want to be bitten by a yellowspotted lizard. That’s the worst thing that can
happen to you. You will die a slow and painful
death.’
The writer has used the alliteration
technique to evoke a bitter and a bad feeling
that Stanley might have while staying in
Camp Green Lake. This shows that it is an
unbearable place to live in and it is very
difficult to survive there. Therefore, this
would make the reader feel sad for Stanley
and sympathize with him and even with the
other campers who will spend eighteen
months in these difficult conditions.
