ABSTRACT
The work immersion program is a learning strategy that aims to provide students with hands-on
experience and exposure to the real world of work. This research paper aims to explore the
advantages and disadvantages of the work immersion program.
The study was conducted through a survey of students who have undergone the program. The
advantages of the work immersion program include the development of job-specific skills,
exposure to work ethics and values, and the opportunity to apply classroom learning in real-world
situations. On the other hand, the disadvantages of the program include the possibility of
inadequate supervision, limited opportunities for learning, and the potential for students to be
exploited for cheap labor.
The findings of this research paper provide insights into the benefits and limitations of the work
immersion program, which can help educators and policymakers in designing and implementing
effective work immersion programs that promote optimal learning outcomes for students.
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
The work immersion program is a learning methodology that provides students with handson experience in a professional work environment. This program aims to prepare students for the
workforce by exposing them to the actual work setting and allowing them to apply the knowledge
and skills they have learned in the classroom. In recent years, the work immersion program has
gained popularity among academic institutions and has been implemented in various fields of
study. One of the primary benefits of the work immersion program is that it provides students with
real-world experience in a professional setting. This experience can be invaluable in preparing
students for the workforce and can give them a competitive edge when seeking employment after
graduation. Work immersion program also allows students to apply the knowledge and skills they
have learned in the classroom to real-world situations. This can help students develop their
communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. However, there are also some
disadvantages to the work immersion program, including limited exposure depending on the length
of the program, students may only have a limited exposure to the work environment. This can limit
their learning and may not provide them with a comprehensive understanding of the industry. Lack
of supervision, in some instances, students may be left unsupervised during their work immersion
program. This can be problematic as students may not have the necessary guidance and support to
navigate the professional setting. The work immersion program has both advantages and
disadvantages. While it can provide students with valuable real-world experience and skill
development, students may also face challenges such as limited exposure and lack of supervision.
It is important for academic institutions to carefully consider these factors when implementing the
work immersion program. The K- to- 12 program has equipped the students with the values,
knowledge and skills that the industries need. Strong partnership with different industries would
also enable graduates to strike a balance between theory and practice. Work Immersion Program
is the Idea presented by the Department of Education. It is a feature in the Senior High School
curriculum (SHS) and refers to the part of that consists of 80 hours of hands- on experience or
work simulation which the 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting
and to enrich the competencies provided by the school under the supervision of the School head
and the designated personnel of the partner.
Work immersion is based on DepEd Order No. 30 series 2017 or otherwise known as the
Guidelines for Work Immersion.” In this student are required a minimum of 80 hours but now it
changed into 240 hours or equivalent of one month of work immersion this 2023 of work
immersion program. This aims to better equip senior high school students for college, work or
business; develop life and career skills; and have attitudes, appreciation and respect for work. It
also allows them to have a smooth transition from school to work after they gain valuable
experience. Work immersion provides Senior High School learners with opportunities to become
familiar with the workplace, simulate employment, and to apply their competencies in areas of
specialization or applied subjects in actual work environment to prepare learners for all curriculum
exits. All of the students may experience different events inside their work immersion site, and
surely, they can get advantages and disadvantages from this kind of program. Students achieve
high proficiency in the immersion language but teacher turnover and lack of community
knowledge and use of the language. But it also improves performance on standardized tests:
immersion students perform as well as or better than non-immersion students on standardized tests
of English and math administered in English. The Work Immersion Program enhanced the
cognitive skills, immersion students typically develop greater cognitive flexibility, demonstrating
increased attention control, better memory, and superior problem-solving skills as well as an
enhanced understanding of their primary language. This increased cultural sensitivity; immersion
students are more aware of and show more positive attitudes towards other cultures and an
appreciation of other people. Work immersion has long term benefits, immersion students are
better prepared for the global community and job markets where a second language is an asset.
One of the advantages of work immersion is that this serves as the internship program of the
students who are soon will be stepping up in college. Internship program is considered to be one
of the most effective ways to enhance students’ skills in their chosen field of specialization the
implemented learning experience that the students can get from it which 240 hours will surely
enable and help students as they familiarize themselves with the workplace thus experience
workplace simulation and apply their competencies in area of specialization. Completion of work
immersion is a prerequisite to graduation under the K- 12 ProDepartment of Education. However,
on the other hand, work immersion program could become disadvantageous if not implemented
well. Students of this program are still considered “young” since they are just fresh graduates from
high school. There is a possible chance that students will not be able to succeed this program. But
as someone who understands the value of this program, I really want to emphasize that the
importance of work immersion must be seen as vital point of giving students a venue to improve
them through experiencing the real stuff on-hand. This is the very highlight of the senior high
school program; it helps students to acquire knowledge and experience that can help them grow as
professional individuals. Generally, what we truly want is to give students the best we can and
provide them the best we could. Work immersion is advantageous to students who want to
experience and learn more about the life of being employed. It prepares them to the bigger world
after graduation and makes them equipped with relevant skills.
Work Immersion Program is one of the best strategies of Department of Education to
educate all of the students, to develop their skills, to grow their good social interaction behavior
and attitudes towards their bosses and even the officials, and to enable them to become more
confident in doing every tasks. In conclusion, the advantages and disadvantages of work
immersion program of all the students has a great impact in their lives and career, to pursue their
college degree and to become successful in life someday. All of their learnings in work immersion
program is very important, they spent time, effort, strength, and even money only to continue rhie
studying and to finish their academic performances in the school.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
LOCAL
According to the Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary, Br. Armin Luistro quoted “We
want our students to be aware of the importance of choosing a track that suites their interest while
at the same time matches the available resources as well as job opportunities that await them.” He
also added that through work immersion, the students are exposed to and become familiarized with
work related environment related to their field of specialization. Specifically, the students are able
to: gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts and workers;
appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories taught in the school;
enhance their technical knowledge and skills; and prepare them to meet the needs and challenges
of employment or higher education after their graduation.
According to (Britiller et al., 2014) Student organizations may be strengthened its function to
encourage students’ participation in taking the lead of planning, organizing, directing and
implementing the programs of the department. Students may always be encouraged to join
curricular and extra-curricular activities specifically in academic contests to make them more
competitive and confident of their skills. Giving learning opportunities to students helps them to
expand their knowledge, cultivate their abilities and discover new skills and talents.
According to Valdez (2010), the curriculum may continue to revisit periodically to align the skills
needed by the industry. The curriculum should be designed to prepare the graduates and
demonstrate the core competencies expected of them in the workplace. On-the-job training is the
best method as it is economical, simple, and effective. doesn’t need wide ranging budgets,
complex training courses, devoted training staffs or absence from the workplace. Its effectiveness
can be significantly enhanced by applying a methodical approach.
Importantly, each on-the-job model has its own merits and weaknesses but they all serve the same
purpose of providing the trainees with the opportunity. Furthermore, at the individual level, on the
job training for students is aimed to increase the employability of graduates in the labor market.
They will gain new occupational skills and advance. It is much closer to the increasing adoptability
capacity of the labor force. So, this instrument helps to constitute main target of public policy in
order to decrease unemployment among graduates. Beside this, on the job training can be a way
to find the first job for graduates. According to Armstrong (1988) training is a systematic
development of knowledge, skills and attitudes required by an individual to perform adequately a
given task or job. In addition, the response to the academic challenges of national and international
significance, higher education system needs to focus on systemic reform to strengthen and make
more competitive their output and services (Buted, Felicen & Manzano, 2014). The university may
continue to implement the outcomes-based education to further strengthen the capability of the
students.. Most universities in the country are already undertaking some of the educational
practices. What they really need now is proper documentation of evidences of assessments and
evaluation on the effectiveness of the program educational objectives which will prove that the
graduates are really equipped with essential knowledge, values (behaviour) and skills that can
contribute to the development of the community (Laguador & Dotong, 2014).
According to David Estrada, Jaydine Mundacruz, Renelyn Pepito, Vanessa San Buenaventura,
Jerome Tabang and Giovannie Bernales Jr. Work immersion is one of the course requirements for
graduation. A senior high school student has to undergo work immersion to prepare them to meet
the needs and challenges of employment or higher education after graduation. To give students an
avenue to improve themselves by experiencing the real world, work immersion must be first-hand
to help students acquire knowledge and experience that can help them grow as individuals. The
qualitative–descriptive method was used in this study. According to the Asia Foundation(October
16, 2018), In the Philippines, youth unemployment hampers meaningful economic development.
The sector’s lack of knowledge, skills, and work experience puts them at a disadvantage. One way
to address this is through the Department of Education’s Senior High School (SHS) program,
ushered by the K-12 education reform. One of its components, the work immersion program,
provides students “real workplace” experience, giving students a set of technical-vocational and
livelihood skills that can help them make more informed career choices and improve their
employment prospects. This story tells how the Coalitions for Change (CfC) program
collaboratively worked with national and local governments and industries to address policy gaps
in the SHS Work Immersion program. So far, the intervention is working well with a high passing
rate in National Certification for tourism-related specializations and some graduates joining the
workforce right after graduation. According to Mendoza (2017) stated that the acquired skills of
the senior high schoolstudents gained after adding two years to basic education through the K to
12Curriculum, the Department of Education (DepEd) has released the guidelinesfor the conduct
of
work
immersion
activities
for
SHS
studens
in
the
country. According to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, the work immersion is a keyfeature in
the senior high school curriculum. It can be conducted in different waysdepending on the purposes
and needs of the learners. It was stated in theguidelines that work immersion will help develop
among learners life and careerskills, and will prepare them to make decisions on postsecondary
education oremployment gearing towards the four exits envisioned for SHS graduates tochoose
from --- employment, entrepreneurship, further skills training throughTESDA and college
education. According to Trade Congress of the Philippines (2015) the word “immersion as it
applies to the K to 12 curriculum is defined in the Department ofEducation (DepEd) Order No. 40,
series of 2015: “Work Immersion refers to the part of the Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum
consisting of 80 hours of hands-on experience or work simulationwhich the Grades 11 and 12
students will undergo to expose them to the actualworkplace setting and to enrich the competencies
provided by the school under the supervision of the School Head and the designated personnel of
the Partner."Immersion is done outside the school campus in a "Workplace Immersion Venue,”
defined as “the place where work immersion of students is done. Examples of work immersion
venues include offices, factories, shops and project sites.”
What could lead to confusion is that the word “immersion” actually has two meanings in K to 12.
The first meaning refers to a required SHS subject in thecurriculum. The second meaning refers
not to a subject but to a preferred modeof delivery of Tech-Voc subjects.
In addition, DepEd Order No. 8, s. 2015 states its policy guidelines on Classroom Assessment for
the K-12 Basic Education Program as mentioned on section 8 of DepEd Order No. 30, s. 2017
(Work Immersion Guidelines) provided the following steps: Grades from all student work are
added up. This results in the total score for each component, namely Written Work, Performance
Tasks and Quarterly Assessment. Raw scores from each component have to be converted to
Percentage Score, this is to ensure that values are parallel to each other; The sum for each
component is converted to the Percentage Score; To compute the Percentage Score (PS) divide the
raw score by the highest possible score then multiply the quotient by 100%; Percentage Scores are
then converted to Weighted Scores to show the importance of each component in promoting
learning in the different subjects; The sum of the Weighted Scores in each component is the Initial
Grade; This Initial Grade will be transmuted using the given transmutation table to get the
Quarterly Grade; and The Quarterly Grade for each learning area is written in the report card of
the student.
Therefore, DepEd Order 039, s., 2018 clarifies and adds information regarding Work Immersion
Progress Monitoring Tool which clearly states that there should be compliance on the following
criteria during the work immersion; Curriculum implementation and compliance (class schedule,
List of offerings vs. community linkages, list of partners institutions and their nature of business
vs. students’ specialization); Work Immersion Delivery Process (prescribed template of students
activities and matrix of students competencies per specialization, evaluation of students readiness
for work immersion which should be tailored to the context of the school, student’s statement of
personal goals in the work immersion vs. list of competencies and activities that will be identified
together with the partner institution supervisor); Assessment of Student’s Progress
(Documentation of student’s orientation about the assessment of their performance); Supervision
of Work Immersion Implementation (monitoring plans of school head, school partnership focal
person and work immersion teacher, and documentation of teachers and personal training with the
attached utilized budget); and Administrative Concerns (complied accomplished parental
consents, documentation of students and parents’ orientation on work immersion, approved budget
vs. financial report of work immersion, display of the profiles of confirmed work immersion
partners, organized compilations of MOAs, inventory of supplies and materials vs. reports of
utilization, list of the approved joint working group, their minutes of meeting and other relevant
documentations, map of facilities and venues in relation to the school’s location, insurance
documents of the school’s location allotment and documentation of orientation for the personnel
and teachers).
FOREIGN
According to Valdez (2010), the curriculum may continue to revisit periodically to align the skills
needed by the industry. The curriculum should be designed to prepare the graduates and
demonstrate the core competencies expected of them in the workplace. With the help of work
immersion, students would be able to be prepared and independent as they graduate in the Senior
High School level. Those activities during immersion would be their guideline as they continue to
their further field of specialization and mastered their skills, which one of the key practices in
improving students' performances in the actual workplace. Armstrong (2008) defines training as
the planned and systematic modification of behavior through learning events, programs, and
instructions, which enables individuals to achieve the levels of knowledge, skills, and competence
needed to carry out their work effectively. By training students in actual work settings, they would
be able to carry out their work more effectively which contributes a positive impact in their work
setting. Likewise, training is an ongoing and continuous process to meet and adapt changes
effectively and quickly. It's an attempt to improve current and future performance by increasing
an employee's ability to perform through learning. Usually by changing in their attitude or
increasing their skills and knowledge (Verma, 2009). Experience is considered to be the greatest
teacher. Through experience students immediately learn things and reach the level of knowledge
they need to know. As they do their respective task and learn at the same time.
As students can use it as motivation as they gain experience in their respective fields. Their
excellent performance during work currently and in the future would be a great contribution to the
company by having an employee who already had an experience when it comes to work and a by
having employees who performed excellence performance at work that would create a positive
impact inside the business. Byars and Rue (2004) found out that training is a learning process that
involves the acquisition of skills, concepts, rules or attributes to enhance the performance of
employees. Learning experiences of the students can get from it surely enable and help them as
they familiarize themselves in the workplace simulation and apply their competencies in their
working areas which prepare them in employment. Based on Gupta (2007), training is an organized
process for increasing the knowledge and skills of people for doing a particular job. It is a learning
process Involving the acquisition of skills and attitude. The purpose of training is to improve
current performance. As the students undergo in the work immersion it creates changes towards
their skills, knowledge, performance, and attitude which change and individual by improving them
by the use of training. As the learning process goes by, it would increase their knowledge and skills
currently but, their learning will last until the future. One of the goals of the K-12 Basic Education
Program is to develop the learners' competencies, work ethic and values relevant to pursuing
further education and/or joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic
education and nation development targets (DepEd Order No.30,2017).
The work Immersion program is the greatest foundation to achieve the nation's
development and target. The learners enhance their knowledge and skills and know the true value
of their work because of training. As they enter the world of work at least they already know their
responsibilities and how to handle their work effectively. Through engaging and challenging
activities in the immersion programs, they will be empowered to make better decisions and face
bigger challenges that they might encounter later on (Icogo, 2017).When the student encounter
challenging experience during immersion, they will going to be prepared, since they already knew
what they're going to do next time they encountered same challenging situation since they already
encounter challenges they will going to handle the accordingly and use better decisions as they
face different challenges. As challenges appear the more students learn and make a rightful
decision when it comes to working that they might use in future purposes. The work immersion
was done but the learnings will remain and will be used for future purposes. After accomplishing
the training, the work immersion trainee understood the life of an employee, they learned how to
adjust themselves into different things and adapt to the new environment. They also knew that the
real world was different and challenging than she was expecting inside the classroom. On the other
hand, it was still a good experience that gave them wisdom and knowledge which they can use for
the future (Perez, 2018).
According to YKS (2018), the will know about works ethics will gain knowledge about
the study in the workplace, the rights, responsibilities, leaving the effective way to resolve conflicts
among coworkers and the work will not be that hard for them if they apply at the same theme or
related company. Rarely are OST students expected to produce same products that regular
employees produce if that's the case, how are these students going to teach them to become future
professionals familiarize work immersion not just help the student to learn, but the work of work
immersion also help students to become in their future job by producing the same products that
regular employee produced. Students also learn how to conflicts in the future since they already
had an experience at the same time as they apply in their future job it would not be hard for them
to do their respective tasks at work. Which each one of them can give a good performance inside
the business which makes the business successful and effective Matthews et.al., (2004) argue that
training is a concern with providing an individual with the opportunity to learn what he/she needs
to do their, job effectively. When the students gain knowledge through work immersion, what they
learned and enchase during training is a big contribution in their Job by producing an excellent
performance which makes them be more effective at work currently until the future. Work
immersion programs are designed to provide students with hands-on work experience in a realworld setting. These programs are becoming increasingly popular in many countries, including the
Philippines. Work Immersion refers to the part of the Senior high school (SHS) Curriculum
consisting of 240 hours of hands on experience or work simulation which the Grade 12 students
will undergo to expose them to actual workplace setting and to enrich competencies provided by
the school under the supervision of the school head and the designated personnel of the partner.
Meanwhile, work immersion is somewhat similar in internship or on-the-job training done
by college students. They have things in common like letting students undergo and experience
actual works in a particular workplace. On the other hand, they differ in some loads and number
of hours they will consume. Therefore, most of the following studies discusses about the on-thejob training. Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary, Br. Armin Luistro quoted “We want our
students to be aware of the importance of choosing a truck that suites their interest while at the
same time matches the available resources as well as job opportunities that await them.” He also
added that through work immersion, the students are exposed to and become familiarized with
work related environment related to their field of specialization. Specifically, the students are able
to: (i) gain relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts and
workers, (ii) appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories taught in the
school. (iii) enhance their technical knowledge and skills; and (iv) prepare them to meet the needs
and challenges of employment or higher education after their graduation. Student organizations
may be strengthened its function to encourage student’s participation in taking the lead of planning,
organizing, directing and implementing the programs of the department.
Students may always be encouraged to join curricular and extra-curricular activities
specifically in academic contests to make them more competitive and confident of their skills.
Giving learning opportunities to students helps them to expand their knowledge, cultivate their
abilities and discover new skills and talents (Britiller et al., 2014). Additionally, the higher
education system must concentrate on systemic transformation to enhance and increase the
competitiveness of its production and services in order to meet the academic problems of
significant national and global scope (Buted, Felicen, & Manzano, 2014). To further improve the
ability of the students to compete with the graduates of ASEAN member countries, the institution
may continue to apply outcomes-based education. Some of the instructional strategies used in OBE
are already being used by the majority of colleges in the nation. In order to demonstrate that
graduates have the necessary knowledge, values (behavior), and skills to contribute to the
development of the community, proper documentation of assessments and evaluations of the
program’s educational objectives is now required. According to Valdez (2010), the curriculum
may continue to revisit periodically to align the skills needed by the industry. The curriculum
should be designed to prepare the graduates and demonstrate the core competencies expected of
them in the workplace. With the help of work immersion, students would be able to be prepared
and independent as they graduate in the Senior High School level. Those activities during
immersion would be their guideline as they continue to their further field of specialization and
mastered their skills, which one of the key practices in improving students’ performances in the
actual workplace. Armstrong (2008) defines training as the planned and systematic modification
of behavior through learning events, programs, and instructions, which enables individuals to
achieve the levels of knowledge, skills, and competence needed to carry out their work effectively.
By training students in actual work settings, they would be able to carry out their work more
effectively which contributes a positive impact in their work setting.
Likewise, training is an ongoing and continuous process to meet and adapt changes effectively and
quickly. It’s an attempt to improve current and future performance by increasing an employee’s
ability to perform through learning. Usually by hanging in their attitude or increasing their skills
and knowledge (Verma, 2009). As the students undergo in the work immersion it creates changes
towards their skills, knowledge, performance, and attitude which change and individual by
improving them by the use of training. As the learning process goes by, it would increase their
knowledge and skills currently but, their learning will last until the future. One of the goals of the
K-12 Basic Education Program is to develop the learners’ competencies, work ethic and values
relevant to pursuing further education and/or Joining the world of work. To achieve greater
congruence between basic education and nation development targets. The work Immersion
program is the greatest foundation to achieve the nation’s development and target. The learners
enhance their knowledge and skills and Know the true value of their work because of training. As
they enter the world of work at least they already know their responsibilities and how to handle
their work effectively. Through engaging and challenging activities in the immersion programs,
they will be empowered to make better decisions and face bigger challenges that they might
encounter later on. When the student encounter challenging experience During immersion, they
will be going to be prepared, since they already knew what they’re going to do next time they
Encountered same challenging situation since they already encounter challenges they will going
to handle the accordingly and use better decisions as they face different challenges. As challenges
appear the more students learn and make a rightful decision when it comes to working that they
might use in future purposes.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Work immersion program is part of SHS curriculum, it refers to the structured and supervised
learning experience that allows the students to apply classroom-based theories and concepts in a
real-life work setting. The program involves partnership between schools. And various
establishment partners to provide students with practical work experience. Having work
immersion for Grade12 students have also considered with importance to experience the real world
outside and to gain knowledge and skills. The researchers decided to conduct this research to know
