Discussion Guidelines for Hist 201, Spring 2023
Participation:
1. Everyone should try to participate actively
2. Don’t dominate the discussion, but speak up if you tend not to
3. Contribute new ideas or build off others’ points
4. Ask questions
5. Be prepared: come to class having done the reading and taken notes, reference
page numbers and quotes in discussion
6. Professor’s role is to encourage participation from everyone, facilitate in a way
that is both guided but also flexible
Respectful Environment:
1. Be charitable to others
2. Actively listen to your peers
3. Don’t interrupt
4. Disagree, but do so respectfully
Historical Analysis:
1. Seek to understand and explain the historical perspective of a reading first,
before evaluation/judging
