TOPGRADING CHAPTER 1

Topgrading solves the hiring problems of dishonesty, incomplete information, and lack of verifiability, problems
that typically result in 75% mis-hires.

GOAL: The goal of Topgrading is to have all high performers, so if you force-rank your team and have A Players
at the bottom, you should celebrate, and certainly not fire any As.
Just use the Career History Form (with the TORC Technique in the instructions) and the Topgrading
Snapshot to give you honest and complete information to screen candidates and invite only sharp
candidates in for interviews. Then use the Starter Topgrading Interview Guide, with a tandem interviewer,
to get total information on every success, failure, key decision, and key relationship in the candidate’s
career. Next ask finalist candidates to arrange reference calls with former bosses, and finally, you and
your tandem partner call those references—the references you chose to talk with.
