How to Make a Successf ul Viral Video What is the secret to producing a video that goes viral? What exactly is it that makes someone want to repost? Is there a formula? In 2013 Real Beauty Sketches, a three-minute video by the soap brand, Dove, stood out in this field. T he short video was analyzed by Visible Measures, an American company which tracks the success of online products. It also observes how the internet audience shares videos. In December of the same year their analysts put together the first top ten viral videos of the year. During that meeting they discovered that since being put online Real Beauty Sketches had achieved 136 million hits. And that was despite not being launched until April on YouT ube. So what was so great about the video to make people feel it was worth sharing? T he video features an FBI agent who draws two pictures of the same women but from two different points of view: One from the women in question and the other from people they had just met but didn’t know. T he fact that it was shared so many times meant that people could relate to it and it seemed that the common held belief was true: When it comes to a woman’s appearance, she is often too self-critical. It was obviously a marketing success but is there a formula when it comes to creating a viral video? Well the answer to that is far from simple. James Whatley works for Ogilvy and Mather Advertising London, and was involved in the campaign. He stated that without good content you’re off to a bad start. T his should be followed by the promotion of that content. One of the most powerful ways of doing this is on social media. Love it or hate it, get a good following there and people are far more likely to want to share the video. After all, if they follow you already on these platforms, they are already fans. T hen there is microcontent which has many forms. One is being able to focus on a specific event and planning around that. For example, a festival such as Christmas or a sporting event like the Olympics. Another is real-time content. T his is created directly as a result of something being talked about online. And Whatley is eager to point out that a big budget is not something that is required. T here are many companies that have achieved massive success on a relatively small one. Provided they are well-timed, relevant and interesting any campaign should have as much chance as the other. Visible Measures is a company which 0 t racks how successful products are online. T he Dove video achieved success because women’s self-critical nature was something which the audience could 1 For James Whatley it all starts with 2 because followers are already 3 to. which is good. Social media is then key in promoting the product and there is a higher chance of them sharing the video. Microcontent is created by specific events or what is being discussed online at that point in time. T his is known as 4 content. By and large, 5 isn’t vital to creating viral campaigns. Rather, it’s the ability to engage with online audiences. Score: /5 WRITING 13 T here is a lot of criticism these days about the amount of time young people spend on their phones.
