Through this course students should be able to
CO1 :: Understand the knowledge of network based on geographical areas to develop different
networks to fulfill the needs of the organization
CO2 :: Enumerate the layers of the OSI model and TCP/IP. Explain the function(s) of each layer.
CO3 :: Analyze the various ways to connect the components through topologies and devices.
CO4 :: Establish the concept of different network security principles and protocols
CO5 :: Analyze and classify particular examples of attacks
CO6 :: Discover various wireless technologies and learn the concept of wireless security
Unit I
Networks basics : what is network, models of network computing ,networking models, peer-to –
peer network,server client network, lan, man and wan, network services, topologies ,switching
techniques
Unit II
Networking models and introduction to TCP/IP : standards ,osi reference model, tcp/ip model,
concept of physical and logical addressing, different classes of ip addressing, special ip address, sub
netting and super netting, loop back concept, ipv4 and ipv6 packet format, configuring ipv4 and ipv6
Unit III
Network connectivity : network connectivity devices ,nics, hubs, switches, routers, configuration of
routers & switches
Unit IV
Network administration : network security principles, cryptography, using secure protocols, trouble
shooting tools: ping,ipconfig, ifconfig, netstat, traceroot,wireshark, nmap, tcpdump, dhcp server, web
server ,workgroup/domain networking
Unit V
Network security : using ssh, sftp & https, virus, worms and trojans definitions, preventive
measures , deploying virus protection., computer network attacks: active attacks, passive Attacks,
stealing passwords, social engineering, bugs and backdoors, denial-of-service attacks, botnets,
phishing attacks, firewalls definition and types of firewalls, configuring & deployment of firewall

Introduction to wireless networks : wireless basics, wireless security
