How to Cite Sources in an APA References List
Use the following guidelines when formatting a list of references in APA style. Remember to
organize all entries alphabetically by the author’s last name. For more information, consult
American Psychological Association. (2020). Publication manual of the American
Psychological Association (7th ed.). American Psychological Association.
Note: Citations in a reference list in APA style should be double spaced, though they do not
appear that way in this handout in order to save space.
1. Journal Article from a Print Source
Author, A. A. (Year). Title of the article. Title of the Journal, Vol. No.(Issue No.), inclusive
page numbers.
NOTE: You need only the year for the date. Do not use p. or pp, Vol., or No. with
journal articles.
York, M. G. (1984). Misogyny in Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare Quarterly, 18(2), 34–57.
