INTRODUCTION TO LEED LEED stands for Leadership Energy and Environmental Design, and is a certification system for the design, construction and operation of sustainable buildings. Originally, LEED was developed for the US market, but over time it has been developed and expanded to target the international market as well. Since its origins, LEED has pushed construction in a more sustainable direction with over 80,000 LEED-certified buildings. LEED is managed by the U.S. Green Building Cuncil, U.S.-G. B.C, but you can find LEED-certified buildings in more than 135 countries around the world. There is no version adapted to Danish standards, but the LEED certification incorporates the European standards. Ongoing updates of the LEED-certification aim to improve standard, encourage leadership, improve usability, accessibility and collaboration on the platform and certification system. LEED, like BREEAM, has its primary focus on indoor climate and environment, here by a focus on materials and energy consumption. LEED is a tool that can help construction focus on efficiency and leadership, thereby raising the standard of construction for the 8 focus areas: In connection with new construction, the certification process is divided into two parts; the design phase and the construction phase. In the first phase, initial design concepts and the location of the building must be submitted to GBCI (Green Business Certification inc.), which evaluates the documents. The result of this assessment is a list that either approves or rejects the sustainability initiatives used in the project. This initial evaluation allows the building owner to improve or correct the relevant topics to an increased level of certification if desired. The next step concerns the materials used in the construction as well as the construction process itself. At the end of the construction phase, documents are submitted for review by GBCI. If documentation is incomplete or lacks information, the project has a period of 25 days to obtain and modify the documentation. More information about LEED can be found at https://www.usgbc.org/leed 4. INPUT BY GENERAL CONTRACTOR The schedule shows prerequisites and credits. Prerequisites must be met to achieve LEEDcertification. Credits can achieve points. The sum of total points decides the level of the LEEDcertification. Certification: 40 to 49 Points; Silver: 50 to 59 Points; Gold: 60 to 79 points; Platinum: 80 to 110 Points. 5 Possible points Target Integrative Process 1 Credit 1 1 Integrative Process Location and Transportation Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Sensitive Land Protection High Priority Site and Equitable Development Surrounding Density and Diverse Uses Access to Quality Transit Bicycle Facilities Reduced Parking Footprint Electric Vehicles Sustainable Sites Prereq Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Construction Activity Pollution Prevention Site Assessment Protect or Restore Habitat Open Space Rainwater Management Heat Island Reduction Light Pollution Reduction Water Efficiency Prereq Prereq Prereq Credit Credit Credit Credit Outdoor Water Use Reduction Indoor Water Use Reduction Building-Level Water Metering Outdoor Water Use Reduction Indoor Water Use Reduction Optimize Process Water Use Water Metering Energy and Atmosphere Prereq Prereq Prereq Fundamental Commissioning and Verification Minimum Energy Performance Building-Level Energy Metering Prereq Fundamental Refrigerant Management Credit Enhanced Commissioning Credit Optimize Energy Performance Credit Advanced Energy Metering Credit Grid Harmonization Credit Renewable Energy Credit Enhanced Refrigerant Management 1 16 4 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 10 0 0 1 1 1 7 Required Required 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 11 1 1 2 1 9 Required Required Required 2 6 0 1 33 Required 2 6 0 1 31 Required Required Required Required Required Required 6 Required 6 18 0 0 5 5 1 (X) Required 18 1 X 1 Required Required Input by GC (X) 1 1 6 Materials and Resources Prereq Credit Credit Storage and Collection of Recyclables Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction Environmental Product Declarations Credit Sourcing of Raw Materials Credit Material Ingredients Construction and Demolition Waste Management Credit Indoor Environmental Quality Prereq Prereq Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Minimum Indoor Air Quality Performance Environmental Tobacco Smoke Control Enhanced Indoor Air Quality Strategies Low-Emitting Materials Construction Indoor Air Quality Management Plan Indoor Air Quality Assessment Thermal Comfort Interior Lighting Daylight Quality Views Acoustic Performance Innovation Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Credit Innovation Purchasing Lamps Green Building Education WELL Features Occupant Comfort Survey Exemplary Performance: Environment Product Declarations Exemplary Performance: Material Ingredients LEED Accredited Professional Regional Priority Credit Regional Priority: Thermal Comfort Credit Regional Priority: Protect or Restore Habitat Credit Regional Priority: Light Pollution Reduction Credit Regional Priority: Optimize Energy Performance Credit Regional Priority: Sensitive Land Protection Credit Regional Priority: Rainwater Management TOTALS Possible Points: 13 9 Required Required 1 1 X 1 X 4 1 1 2 16 4 1 X 2 X 13 Required Required 2 2 Required 2 Required 2 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 1 0 2 1 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 4 4 1 1 1 1 0 0 110 X 1 1 1 X 2 6 1 X 2 6 1 X X X 1 1 1 0 0 84 7 5. DOCUMENTATION THAT MUST BE SUPPLIED TO THE LEED-CERTIFICATION Certification matrix The Certification-Matrix is shared online on Sharepoint. The various team-members of the project are marked with “X”, where they are expected to give input. The Matrix gives some information about the prerequisites and credits, and it also links to explanation on the USGBC-webpage. Figure 1, Screenshot of matrix LEED manuals v4-manual:”LEED_BDC_FINAL.pdf” v4.1-manual: “LEED_v4.1_BD_C_Guide_102521.pdf” Here you can read more in detail about requirements for prerequisites and credits, and what reference standards are used. Our project is certified after the v4.1-manual. The v4.1-manual refers to sections of the v4manual, where the prerequisites and credits have not been changed. Figure 2, Screenshot of LEED v4.1 manual 8 Figure 3, Screenshot of LEED v4 manual Sample Forms Each prerequisite and credit has a sample form, that need to be filled in online together with the required documentation. A randomly filled in sampla form is downloaded as pdf, to be used as guidance to see requirements for documentation.
