1) After the Arabian Oryx was declared extinct in the 1970s, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the UAE, launched a successful conservation programme. Now mainly found roaming around Abu Dhabi’s Qasr Al Sarab protected area. The Oryx has majestic horns that grow vertically from its head. The gene that coordinates taller horns is an X-linked characteristic. Show how females of the species often have longer horns than males. Use a Punnett square to help you. 2) Two sandy-white Oryx have an offspring whose coat colour is brown. Use a Punnett square to show how this is possible. Can you explain why whites and sandy yellow colours are the most common colours in the architecture of the UAE – Reference the Oryx in your answer and link your thoughts to another Y10 topic. 3) Speckled chickens (Black and White) and Roan cattle (Red and White) are both examples of codominance. Show these two crosses in Punnett squares. 4) Male date palms are identified by the shape of their blossoms. The blossom phenotype associated with males is fluffy white and star-shaped as opposed to the female phenotype which resembles beads on a string. Use the example of date palms to show the ratio of 1:1 we expect to see in the sex determination of offspring. 1) After the Arabian Oryx was declared extinct in the 1970s, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the UAE, launched a successful conservation programme. We unfortunately cannot use the Sheikh’s family tree when looking at pedigree diagrams. The tradition in the UAE is for the family trees to only contain the males from the family line. This makes it difficult to trace back the genetic alleles of both the mother and the father!
