A game played between two teams of five players in which goals are scored by throwing a ball through a netted hoop fixed above each end of the court. This game usually played indoors on a rectangular floor called the court. Basketball is a team sport in which two teams are opposing one another on a court. HISTORY OF BASKETBALL December 5,1891 (The Invention of Basketball) Dr. James Naismith Invented the game basketball in Springfield Massachusetts. A physical education teacher YMCA in Springfield. He invented this game to keep his student active during the cold winter. January 20,1892 (The First Official Game) The first official basketball game was played at YMCA in Albany, New York with nine players. February 9, 1895 (The First College Basketball Game is Played) The first basketball game is played between Hamline University and The School of Agriculture. November 20, 1898 (The First Pro Basketball League is Established) The national basketball league was established to organize players and establish official rules. May 14, 1906 (The Invention of the Modern Hoop) Peach baskets were used until 1901, when the modern hoop was invented with a metal rim and cloth net. May 28, 1949 (The NBA is formed) The BAA (Basketball Association of America) merged with the National Basketball League to form the National Basketball Association (NBA). February 5, 1958 (The Implementation of the Modern Basketball) Tony Hinkle Invented the more visible orange-rubber basketball that is used today. March 18, 1959 (Dribbling becomes part of the game) Once the manufacturing of basketballs became universal, the technique of dribbling was implemented. March 25, 1976 (The ABA-NBA merger) The American Basketball Association emerged in 1967 and briefly threatened the NBA’s dominance until the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. BASKETBALL IN THE PHILIPPINES Americans (United States Young Men’s Christian Association) They introduced basketball in the Philippines in 1900 and it was first played in Intramurous, Manila. April 9, 1975 the first league was played its first game at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon city during this time. PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) It is a men’s professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of 12 company banded franchised team. It is the first professional basketball league in Asia and is the second oldest continuously existing in the world after the NBA. Only five players per team on the court. 2. Score more than your opponent to win. 3. Score within the shot clock. 4. Dribbling advances the ball. 5. The offense has five second to inbound the ball. 6. The offense must advance the ball. 7. Ball and ball handler must remain inbounds. 8. Defenders can’t interfere with a shot on a downward trajectory. 9. Defenders can legally block or steal the ball. 10. Defenders must leave the paint after three seconds. 11. Each team is allotted a certain number of fouls. 12. Illegal contact results in a foul. 13. Illegal contact results in a personal foul. 14. Excessive contact results in a flagrant foul. 15. Charges and illegal screens results in an offensive foul. 16. Certain rule violation results in technical fouls. Terminologies Assist- a pass directly to your team leading to make a score. Block- touching a ball before the hoop, preventing opponents to make a score. Dribbling- bouncing the ball off the floor repeatedly without picking it up. Dunk- when a player jumps and throws the ball through the hoop from close range. Pass- to throw the ball to one’s teammates. Rebound- to gather the ball after a missed shoot. Shoot- an attempt to throw the ball into the hoop. Three Point Line- the semi-circle surrounding the key. Traveling- a violation for moving without dribbling the ball. Free Throw- a shot rewarded after a player is fouled, worth 1 point. Foul- an action by a player who break the rules of basketball. Categories of Fouls Personal Foul- a foul that is physical in nature like grabbing and pushing. Flagrant Foul- a foul that involve extraordinary violent contact with an opposing player or a dangerous non-basketball play. Technical Foul- a foul that is unsportsman like, including screaming at the referee or an opponent. Time out- a period of 60 seconds during which the play stopped and teams discuss strategy. Hoop- the basketball ring. Cross-over dribble- when a ball holder dribble across their body from one to another. Defense- one act of preventing the offense from scoring. BASIC SKILLS 1.
