Presented by Mizan Rehman Senior Lecturer Accounting & Finance Introduction to Managing Finance UMAD47-15-M Aims & objectives of the module • This module aims to introduce students to accounting & finance function and information it produces, especially for managers. • It will enables students to understand financial information and how to use it for management purposes. This will be carried out by applying various accounting techniques and processes on classroom exercises and data set from the real world. Aims & objectives of the module • It will develop research skills which will enable students to locate, extract, manipulate and analyse financial data and to present the finding in a professional manner. • It will enhance IT skills of students by introducing softwares which are used by accounting and finance professionals. Please note that this module does not aims to make you an accountants but enable you to interact with them and use the information which they produce for management. Topics covered • Financial statements & principles of financial reporting. • Financial ratios • Marginal and absorption costing and the contribution approach. • Activity based costing (ABC). • Decision making techniques. • Investment appraisal • Budgeting processes. • The balanced scorecard and other measurement frameworks. Assessments • MCQ Exam This will be conducted in one of the scheduled classes during the term. There will be 25 short multiple choice questions with one hour completion time. • Business Report This is a 2000 words report which need to focus on the techniques taught in the classes. The submission will be during the assessment period. Assessments Detailed information on the assessments will be provided well before the assessment deadlines and generally there is a lot of discussion in the classes to give clear guidelines on assessments and how to perform well.
