The article is about an ethnic group and their struggle to survive in their home country. This
group is often described as "the world's most persecuted minority". This ethnic group of people
who are called the Rhoynga people. Majority of the population of this groups is muslim, and
have lived in the State Mynamar which was originally called Burma for centuries. Currently,
there are about 1.1 million Rohingya who live in the Southeast Asian country. Although they
have been living in this country for so long they have not been granted citizenship to the country
due to a law that was passed in 1982 and are not part of the country’s 135 ethnic groups,
therefore leaving them stateless. As a result of the law, their rights to study, work, travel,
practice their religion and access health services have been and continue to be
restricted. Ever since this new citizenship law had been passed these areas in Rhakine
where the Rohynga have reported many allegations of killings, sexual assault, torture
and arson to the Rohynga community by Mynamar security force, the mynamar
government continues to deny these allegations and anyone who tries tos peak up about
their acts are thrown in Jail. Violence broke out in northern Rakhine state on 25
August, when militants attacked government forces. In response, security forces
supported by Buddhist militia launched a “clearance operation” that has killed at least
1,000 people and forced more than 300,000 to flee their homes. They fleed to countries
like Bangaldesh, MAlaysia and even Thailand.
Why is it important + How its related to Geography
It is important to know about because 1.1 million people are being forced to leave their
home country to survive sexual abuse, torture, and other forms of harm. Its important
for us to be educated on this issue because since Canada is country that is wealthy and
has the ability to help these people it is our job to help them. We also need to be
educated on what is going on in Mynamar so that we can do our best to send help to
these Rohynga people. This issue relates to the politics because there are many
allegations that the government is continuing to not only cause this issue but enlarge it
and now most of these people are flooding to Bangladesh who are genoursly taking as
many people as possible in to the country. Yet this is a rising issue for Bangladesh
because Bangladesh is also a country that is rising in the poverty scale and they can only
give so much to help these Rohynga people.
