APA 101
APA 7 style guide for students
Writing Center Workshop
What is APA?
American Psychological Association
This format was created to be the standard writing format
for social sciences, but is occasionally used in other
settings as well.
Who uses this format?
People in the social sciences (Psychology, Economics,
Linguistics, Sociology, Criminology, Business) as well as
Education and Nursing
How is this different from MLA?
Broadly, the presentation of the info in the citation is
different, as well as some style choices in the title and
body differ. MLA is generally for arts and literature,
whereas APA is for technical reports.
CLEAR AND CONCISE
General Rules
Your writing should
get the point across
in the shortest and
most accurate way
possible
Write objectively.
Avoid using "I." Use a
presentation level of
formality.
Do not use figurative
language.

Times New Roman- 12 (recommended)
FORMATTING
Paper sections should
be bolded.
Page number should be
at the top-right of each
page.
The first line of each
paragraph should be
tabbed.
DOUBLE-SPACED
Pretty much everything
should be double-spaced
(vertically)
Here is the basic format:
Citing in APA
LastName, First Initial. Middle
Initial., (Year of Publication). Title of
article. Publication/Journal,
Volume(Issue), Page-Numbers. DOI
Here's an example:

Important details:
*Presentation Disclaimer: All citations in a References section should have a hanging
indent. Be sure to add it when you draft your paper!
Always separate names with a comma, and
separate the last two names with a "&".
If the article was published by an
organization, use the org's name as the
author (e.g. American Psychological Assoc.)
No date? Do (n.d.) for "no date".
"Retrieved from" should never be in an APA
7 citation.

Section
When you have all your citations
-Put them in alphabetical order by last name of
first author.
-Make sure all citations have a hanging indent.
-Put your reference section on a new page and
create a centered and bolded title as "References"
...How do I do a hanging indent?
For Microsoft Word and Google Docs:
-DOCS: First, highlight the text with your mouse.
The go to Format > Align & Indent > Indentation
Options > Special Indent > Hanging
- WORD: Highlight the text with your mouse.
Then go to Home > Paragraph > Indents and
Spacing > Special >Hanging. Then click OK.

Summary or Paraphrase
According to Boba et al. (2020), Dad jokes can be puns
but not all puns are Dad jokes.
OR
Dad jokes can be puns but not all puns are Dad jokes
(Boba et al., 2020)
Use "&" in parentheses
Use "and" outside parentheses
Stay away from direct quotes if you can.
APA style prefers summarizing and
synthesizing sources.
New for APA 7
In Text Citations should always be
abbreviated with et al.
APA 6 (old)
As discussed by Boba, Sweet, Green, and Hot
(2020)...
APA 7 (use this one!)
As discussed by Boba et al. (2020) ...
... teas are better than coffee (Boba, Sweet,
Green & Hot, 2020)

Only references beyond the 1st can use et al.
