Identify FOUR components of a (body) paragraph and state their
functions
1. Introductory paragraph : The introductory paragraph is the first paragraph of the essay. It
introduces the main idea of the paragraph, attracts the reader's attraction and tells why
your topic is important. Also he thesis statement is usually found in the introductory
paragraph. The thesis statement states the main idea of a paragraph and controls the ideas
within the essay. The introductory paragraph must be clear and direct.
2.Major supporting sentence: It provides further explanation that helps to develop the topic
sentence. It reinforces the main idea of the paragraph by providing additional information. Also they
offer explanations, definitions etc. that expand upon the topic sentence. It provides examples and
details that help to develop the topic sentence.
3. Minor supporting sentence: It provides specific details that help to illustrate the major supporting
sentences of the paragraph.
4. Concluding paragraph: Is the last paragraph of an essay. It provides a sense of closure. The
concluding paragraph is where you summarise the main points of your essay and restate your thesis
statement. It reminds the reader of your main idea. The concluding paragraph can include a call for
action, a final thought, an advice, a suggestion etc. depending on what you are writing about. It plays
an essential role in the structure of an essay and brings the essay to a logical end.
