1. A small company makes a profit of $8000. This is divided between the directors in the
ratio of their initial investments. If Alex put $20 000 into the firm, Maria $35 000 and
Ahmet $25 000, calculate the amount of the profit they will each receive.
2. A gas pipe is 7 km long. A valve is positioned in such a way that it divides the length of the
pipe in the ratio 4 : 3. Calculate the distance of the valve from each end of the pipe.
3. 55% of students in a school are boys.

4. A teacher shares sweets among 8 students so that they get 6 each. How many sweets
would they each have had if there had been 12 students?

6. A train travelling at 100 km/h takes 4 hours for a journey. How long would it take a train
travelling at 60 km/h?
7. A worker in a sugar factory packs 24 cardboard boxes with 15 bags of sugar in each. If he
had boxes which held 18 bags of sugar each, how many fewer boxes would be needed?
8. A swimming pool is filled in 30 hours by two identical pumps. How much quicker would it
be filled if five similar pumps were used instead?
9. At a rugby match, the ratio of children to adults is 2 : 3 There are 80 children in the crowd.
Each adult ticket costs £8 Each child ticket costs a quarter of the adult ticket. Work out the
total money made from ticket sales
10. 4 schools sent students to a languages course. One of the schools sent both French and
German students. The ratio of French to German students it sent was 1 : 3 The school sent
21 German students. The other 3 schools sent the same number of students. Work out
the total number of students sent to the languages course
