Blake Cline CAD 2: Cosmetic Design 1. The cosmetic design of this robot follows the theme of vehicles. It has been designed to model a simple toy sports car geared toward young kids with its minimalistic design. As seen in the image, the design’s main feature is the spoiler, its sharp edges draw contrast from the rest of the rounded car. The body of the car is designed to be a casing for any circuitry and motors necessary to increase functionality. Its body can easily be hollowed out for said motors. 2. For this design, the most important feature is technology, with a weight of 10. The model is easily hollowed out to include motors and circuitry and the top panel of the car can be removed to see. By doing this, it allows for the target audience to gain a better understanding of how circuits, wiring, and motors work in together for functionality. Next, practicality, with a weight of 7, the design is practical because of it is simplicity, as well as easily removable panel. The robot can be created with very minimal pieces, 3 body pieces plus the wheels and axles. Next is capability with a weight of 6. The product demonstrates capability in its simplistic design through a few key features; the body shape and spoiler add an aerodynamic benefit to the robot’s speed, also, the large wheels in the back allow for more powerful rotations from the motors in the rear. 3. Engineering specifications in this design are; to have less than 10 parts, compact design (less than 500 cm^3), and to reach a maximum speed of 50m/s. The weighting of parts is 8 because it is meant to be easily assembled by the customer in the target audience, there is a total of 9 pieces. Having a compacted design is relatively important, weight of 6, because the car needs to be small enough to be easily transportable and will weigh into cost of production. In total the robot takes up approximately 466 cm, 34 less than the maximum. Lastly, the car needed to be performance driven and reach a maximum speed of 50m/s. The weight of this is 5, since it is ideal but not essential to the car’s performance. Ultimately this is based on the strength of the motor, but is enhanced by the aerodynamic design of the body, and spoiler, as well as the rear-wheel drive mechanism.
