Physical and Chemical Weathering of Rock The rock cycle is driven, in part, by the physical and chemical weathering of rocks already on Earth. There are 2 types of weathering. One is physical weathering: the process that breaks rocks apart without changing their chemical composition. The other is chemical weathering: the erosion of rocks caused by chemical reactions (chiefly with water and substances dissolved in it). Sort the examples as ways rock is physically broken down or chemically changed. Physical Weathering Chemical Weathering Acid rain dissolving rock Ice wedging Reaction with oxygen When rain grabs CO2 & it seeps into rock Plant roots growing into rock Water chemically reacting with rock Abrasion~ rock hitting other rock Thermal (heat) expansion
