To convert Roman numerals to our numbers, you add.
XII = 10 + 1 + 1, or 12
Whenever there is a 4 or 9 in Roman numerals, you will subtract.
IV = 5 - 1, or 4
IX = 10 - 1, or 9
Now look at the number below. You need to add and subtract.
XIV = 10 + 5 - 1, or 14
