PET B1 SPEAKING EXAMINER DIALOGUE/ QUESTIONING
Speaking Part 1 – Interview (2-3 minutes)
– What’s your name?
– What’s your surname?
– How do you spell it?
– Where are you from?
– What do you like about your city?
– Do you work or are you a student?
– Why are you learning English?
– How will you use English in the future?
Speaking Part 2 – Discussion (2-3 minutes)
I’m going to describe a situation to you.
A friend of yours is planning to spend 6 months in England to improve her English. Talk together about the things she
will need in England, and decide which are the most important things to take/bring with her.
Here’s a picture with some ideas to help you.
Speaking Part 3 – Describing a Picture (1 minute each, 3 minutes the whole part)
Now I’d like you to talk on your own about something. I’m going to give each of you a photograph of people reading
and writing.
Candidate A, here’s your photograph. Please, show it to Candidate B, but I’d like you to talk about it. Candidate B, you
just listen, I’ll give you your photograph in a moment.
Candidate A, please tell us what you can see in your photograph.
(Then, the interlocutor will say the following after Candidate A has finished.)
Now, Candidate B, here’s your photograph. It also shows reading and writing. Please show it to Candidate A and tell
us what you can see in the photograph.
Speaking Part 4 – General Conversation (3 minutes)
In this part, you have to hold a conversation with your partner about the topic featured in part 3. This normally
includes talking about your likes and dislikes, opinions, past experiences, habits, etc. The task that comes after the
pictures in part 3 is the following:
Your photographs showed people reading and writing. Now, I’d like you to talk together about the different kinds of
reading and writing you did when you were younger, and the kinds you do now. (After 3 minutes of conversation)
Thank you. That is the end of the test.

PET B1 READING/ WRITING/ LISTENING
This paper takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. It carries 50% of the total marks for the exam.
READING
Part 1:
Students read five short notices or messages and choose the correct answer. 5 questions
Part 2:
Students match the requirements of five people to five of eight short texts. 5 questions
Part 3:
Students read a text and decide whether ten statements are true or false. 10 questions
Part 4:
Students read a text and choose the correct answer from four options. 5 questions
Part 5:
Students choose the correct word to complete the spaces in a text. 10 questions
WRITING
Part 1:
Students complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first sentence. 5 questions
Part 2:
Students write a short message including three pieces of information that they are given. 1 question
Part 3:
Students write an informal letter answering some questions

Students write a story using the title or the opening sentence given.

LISTENING
This paper takes about 30 minutes and carries 25% of the total marks.
Students hear each part twice.
Part 1:
Students listen to seven short recordings and choose the correct pictures. 7 questions
Part 2:
Students listen to a talk or interview and choose the correct answers. 6 questions
Part 3:
Students listen to one speaker and complete some notes. 6 questions
Part 4:
Students listen to a conversation and decide if six statements are true or false. 6 questions

FCE B2 SPEAKING INTERLOCUTOR DIALOGUE
Part 1 (Interview)
Tests ability to: use language for social purposes, e.g. making introductions, answering questions about yourself.
Part 1 of the FCE Speaking test lasts about 3 minutes. The examiner will ask some 'getting-to-know-you' questions perhaps to find out
where you come from, your interests, your family or your studies etc.
Example Questions
Q: Where are you from?
Q: Tell me something about your family.
Q: What did you enjoy most when you were at primary school?
Q: Do you have any plans for a holiday this year?
Q: Do you play any musical instruments?
Part 2 (Long Turn)
Tests ability to: speak at length coherently, use language to describe, compare and contrast and comment upon a topic.
Part 2 of the FCE Speaking test lasts between 4 minutes (6 minutes for groups of three). The examiner gives you two photographs and
your partner a different pair of photographs. You have to speak about your two photos without interruption for about 1 minute and
also answer a question about your partner's photographs when he or she has finished their long turn.
Example Task
The interview will begin with the examiner saying something like:
Q: In this part of the test I'm going to give each of you two photographs. I'd like you to talk about your photographs on
your own for about 1 minute and also to answer a short question about your partner's photographs.
Q: (Candidate A), here are your photographs. They show people participating in sporting activities.
Part 3: (Collaborative Task)
Tests ability to: use language to discuss, express an opinion, to agree and disagree, speculate and evaluate etc.
In Part 3 of the test, which lasts about 3 minutes, the examiner will give both candidates instructions and a set of visuals and the
candidates will have to try to reach some form of agreement.
Example Task
The examiner will say something like:
Q: Now, I'd like you to talk about something together for about 3 minutes.
Q: I'd like you to imagine that you are planning a week-long touring holiday with your partner around the country that you're studying
in. You want to see as much as possible but don't want to spend too much money on transport. Look at the types of transport shown
in the photographs.
Q: First talk to each other about how useful each of these forms of transport might be for your holiday. Then decide which one would
be best.
Q: All right?
Test Part 4: (Discussion)
Tests ability to: use language to express and justify an opinion, to agree and disagree etc.

In Part 4 of the test, which lasts about 4 minutes, the examiner will join both candidates in a discussion about the general topic that
appeared in Part 3.
