enabling learning objectives for this course are those described (as applicable)
in the textbook, lecture, online learning modules, or other learning activities.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
This 14-week Medical Terminology and Anatomy course is conducted 100%
online. A reliable computer with internet access is required for successful
completion and participation in the course. Course work is divided into Thirteen
(13) Body system Learning Modules, and a final exam. Each module has
assigned reading, questions, discussions, quizzes, and activities, so allow
yourself time each week to work on the assignments. Each assigned activity
has a specific due date and time. For due dates, please refer to the Course
Schedule.
5
Students are responsible for checking due dates and submitting work before the
due date and time. All work is submitted within the Brightspace learning
platform or through online links to access any other assigned resources on the
web.
Students should expect to spend 10 – 12 hours per week on the reading and
activities.
Frequent participation is required and is maintained through the Discussion
board. Students who do not participate in the course each week or who do not
submit assigned work may be dropped for nonparticipation. Students will
receive an email via MyCNM notifying them of their non-participation and a date
on which they will be dropped from the course if they do not contact the
instructor.
ATTENDANCE
Students enrolled for credit or audit are expected to participate
in all class modules. Instructors will audit participation.
***A student who misses the first week of class and has not contacted the
instructor may be dropped for nonparticipation.
A student with excessive missed work may be dropped from a course.
Excessive is any two (2) assignments, discussions, quizzes, or exams.
Students dropped from a course for non-participation will also be dropped from
co-requisite courses. A student should not assume he/she will be dropped
automatically.
***A student who is dropped by an instructor for nonattendance is
notified at their CNM e-mail address. The instructor's decision is final, but if the
student disagrees with the action, he or she must contact the instructor within
two working days of receipt of the notification.

MAKE-UP EXAMINATIONS
There are no make-up quizzes or exams in this course. Please read the
course schedule for due dates and times carefully.
LATE WORK
Each module and activity has an assigned due date. Work should be
submitted prior to the Due Date and time. Late work is not accepted. Plan to
submit your work before the due date and time to avoid computer crashes, theft,
loss, or forgetting to complete the work.
There are certain activities that absolutely cannot be submitted after the Due Date
such as the Final Exam.
COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT POLICY
When you enter the course, you should check for course announcements. This is
where the instructor will post important course related information, explanations of
course topics or emergency information that will have a bearing on your success in
the course. You should check the announcements at least three (3) times a week
for new announcements.
COMMUNICATION - CONTACTING ME
*****The best way to contact me is via my CNM email at
pvilla4@cnm.edu.
1. Use only your official CNM email for communications. That is your
cnm.edu address It will be the only email address we send important
communications to. Due to the endless amount of malicious emails,
CNM uses rules which may prevent your communication via an external
email account from reaching me.
2. Always place this in your subject line when contacting me:
a. HIT1020-D01_Summer_2023 Your Subject
b. Notice that this is the same as the title in Blackboard for this course.
Ensure you use the right dashes and underscores by simply
copying this and pasting to a document that includes things you will
come to learn to copy and paste.
8
3. If you do not include this in the subject line, I may note its importance
and may not respond as quickly. You will be responsible for the
consequences of delayed communications.
4. Your communications need to have good email netiquette.
a. Your email communications on CNM email is a legal form of
communications so treat it professionally. Use a salutation, write in
words not text abbreviations and emojis, never use all caps, refrain
from unprofessional wording including obscenities, and be
respectful.
b. See Distance Learning netiquette policy. Course Specific
Information for more details.
5. Posting communication with me directly in Brightspace discussion areas
will not notify me in a timely manner of your communication, even for
muddy areas and FAQ sections of discussions. If you need to
communicate with me outside of a classroom discussion, email should
be your primary method of contact.
COURSE SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Medical Terminology and Anatomy course is conducted online within the
Brightspace learning environment.
Reading
Textbook is Essentials of Medical Language 4th Edition by Allan
The assigned reading can be found in each module under Reading. Each chapter
covers a different body system, its anatomy, its function, its diseases and
conditions, method of diagnosis, and treatments. There are fifteen chapters
covered each semester. Some modules will have two chapters assigned.
Check Your Understanding Assessments
Modules 2 – 13 have a short self-assessment at the beginning of the module. Each
self-assessment has 4-5 questions and is worth five (5) points. The
selfassessments are based on material in the preceding module. Example: Module
3 had the Check Your Understanding self-assessment on the material in Module 2.
9
The assessments are included with the Discussions for weighting at 10% of the
total grade.
Module Assignments/Activities
Each Module has activities that are accessed by clicking on the title of the activity.
Many of the activities are located on the internet and are interactive. You may
repeat the activities to obtain the grade you desire. Proof of your grade on any
activity is provided by doing a Print screen of the grade and attaching it to the
Brightspace submission site. Assignment/Activities are required and carry a
weight of 20% of the total grade.
Discussions
There are six (6) discussion assignments and one (1) medical record
assignment in this course. Each discussion has specific questions or directions
that students must complete for their initial post. After submitting the initial post,
students are expected to respond to the initial posts of two (2) other classmates.
Rubrics are available in BB for each type of assignment. These rubrics provide
information about how the assignments will be graded. Students must have three
(3) complete posts to obtain any credit for the discussion. Discussion assignments
have a weight of 10% of the total grade.
Quizzes
Each module includes a module quiz based on the material in that module unless
stated otherwise. Each quiz is worth 25 points and has 25 questions that are a
combination of multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching, or true and false.
Students have two (2) attempts to take each quiz and the highest grade will be
accepted. Questions will not be the same on each attempt. You have 30 minutes
to complete each attempt. There are NO make-up quizzes. Quizzes carry an
overall weight of 20% of the total grade.
Pronunciation Activities
There are two (2) Pronunciation assignments, one in Module 4 an done in Module
10. The Pronunciation assignments provide a method of assessing the student’s
ability to accurately read and pronounce/communicate medical terms with other
professionals. Students record a paragraph that is provided and submit the
recording for grading. Being able to accurately read and communicate with other
medical staff and with patients is crucial. Rubrics are provided within Blackboard to
10
assist students in completing the assignments. Pronunciation activities have a
weight of 20% of the total course grade.
Note: Students with special needs will be accommodated through Disability
Services.

including multiple choice, true and false, fill in the blank, and matching taken from
all modules in the class. One (1) attempt is allowed to take the Final and 120
minutes (2 hours) are provided for completion. The Final carries a weight of 30%

INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION
My name is Patricia Villa, and I am an R EEG T II (registered
Electroneurodiagnostic Technician) at University of New Mexico Hospital. I
have been an R EEG T for over 7 years, and I am working on my CLTM
(Certified Long Term Monitoring Technician), so I know the trials and
tribulations of due dates, student responsibilities and online courses. I have
taken over 40 online courses and I know what seems to work and what does
not. I try very hard to stay in touch with course problems and student concerns
and I tend to respond to emails quickly. One of my major complaints about
online courses is instructors who do not respond to student concerns. In fact, I
took one course where I was convinced the instructor did not exist. I expect
emails from students in online courses and I do not bite. I live in New Mexico
and instruct at CNM South Valley campus.
