School of Information Technology, Engineering,
Mathematics and Physics (STEMP)
The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics is committed
to ensuring that your learning, and teaching environment is healthy and safe at all times.
For your part as a USP/STEMP student; please read, understand, and follow the laboratory
regulations listed below during the entire duration of your studies here.
Laboratory Safety Regulations
1. Closed footwear must be worn in the laboratory at all times (strictly no “flip-flops” or
bare feet). If, for medical reasons, you are not able to wear the required footwear, you
must present a signed medical certificate from the USP medical officer to the laboratory
instructors. They may allow you to enter the laboratory at their own discretion.
2. Hair of shoulder length or longer must be tied up, well away from your face. This is to
minimise the likelihood of any contact with electrical equipment, machinery, or open
flames, and hot metal sparks (e.g. from welding stations, grinders, etc.).
3. Do not enter the laboratory with excessively loose clothing, and/or jewelry. If you do,
then you will be told to leave, and to return only when you are suitably attired for physics
and engineering laboratory work – refer to rule 2 above.
4. Do not wear sleeveless tops (e.g. vests), or shorts that do not come down to within two
(2) centimetres above your knee. If you do, then you will be told to leave, and to return
only when you are suitably attired for physics and engineering laboratory work – refer
to rule 2 above.
5. Do not switch on any electrical supplies until all electrical circuitry, and electrical
connections – even the most basic ones, have been examined and approved by the
laboratory instructor(s) or technician(s).
6. You will not smoke or eat in the laboratory. You are allowed one bottle of water, not
exceeding two (2) litres filled capacity; however, this is to be placed in a safe and secure
location, well away from electrical equipment, machinery, and electrical power outlets.

7. You will always act in an orderly manner: i.e. no running, no climbing up on to furniture,
no sitting on workbench tops, etc.
8. Use only the apparatus that you are required to use for your particular experiment or
project. Do not handle, or use any other equipment without the prior approval of a
laboratory instructor or the technician(s) servicing the laboratory.
9. Handle all apparatus with the utmost care. You will be fully liable for any damage(s)
caused by your own negligence.
10. You must report any breakages or faults to the laboratory instructor(s) or technician(s)
immediately.
11. Notify the laboratory instructor(s) or technician(s) immediately if there is an accident,
or if a fellow student has fallen ill.
12. If time permits; you must try to leave your workbench neat and tidy, before you exit the
laboratory.
YOUR SIGNED DECLARATION
(By signing this declaration, you have indicated to all concerned that you have carefully read,
fully understood, and committed yourself to these twelve regulations. You will abide by all
these regulations at all times, whilst you are within – or working outside, this STEMP laboratory
conducting your experiments and/or projects)
I have read, and fully understand the twelve regulations listed above, and I agree to abide
by these at all times. I also acknowledge that contravening any of these regulations may
result in my being instructed to leave the laboratory.
