Writing a FRQ The Exam • Section II: Free Responseď 2 Questions- 50 Minutes • 33.3% of Exam Score • Topics/themes addressed by these questions may include • Analyze a unique scenario using concepts from different theoretical frameworks or subdomains in the field • Design, analyze, or critique a research study Sample FRQ Rachel is an excellent high school student who earns high grades in challenging classes. She has recently been hired as a part-time lab assistant at a medical clinic. She is concerned that the job will affect her school performance. Part A Provide a specific example that clearly illustrates how each of the following would inhibit Rachel’s success at her new job. • Stereotype threat • Adrenal glands • Lack of REM sleep Part B Provide a specific example that clearly illustrates how each of the following would enhance her performance as a student with a challenging academic schedule. • Distributed practice • Reciprocal determinism • Self-efficacy Tips for Writing • Read before answering • Carefully read both of the questions before you start to write anything. • Decide which question you are more comfortable with and answer that one first. • Watch your time carefully because you have only 50 minutes to answer both questions. Tips for Writing • Follow the questions within the question • It may be helpful to underline key verbs or phrases in the questions that identify what exactly the question is directing you to do • Note that if a question asks you to explain or apply a concept to a person’s behavior but does not ask you to define the term, avoid only defining • You should answer each of the components of a freeresponse question in the order. Tips for Writing • Use all of the available time for the free-response section. • If any time remains after you have finished writing, reread your answers and make sure they are legible, clear, and actually answer the question that has been asked. • If you discover there is something you need to add, do it. • Sometimes these revisions can earn you points. If you need to add a substantial amount of information, you can draw an arrow off to the side of the page, or insert an asterisk • **Always answer both questions!!!!!! How to set up the “essay” • Write an essay. Use complete sentences and paragraphs to respond to the question. • Readers do not score any information that is in outline form or answers that are presented solely as lists. • Skip the introduction and the conclusion. • Your essay is scored only for its ability to respond to the specific points in the question. • Demonstrate your knowledge. Use psychological language and concepts in your answers.(Underline terms) Writing Tips • Write to the points. • Read each question carefully and focus on writing to the point. • Reader’s award points only for what is correct; points are not deducted for incorrect information. • BUT…..The information you provide must relate to the question. • Avoid contradictions and be specific • Write legibly
