1. Learners in the Senior/FET Phase would be able to identify water problems, littering
and air pollution in and around the school.
Water problems - learners always leave the taps dripping, hence water floods the area
around the tap and gets wasted. This problem could be solved by teaching learners
about the importance of water, taking into account the fact that there are people out
there who lack water. I would instruct the learners to bring along with them any type of
bottle (even 2l coke bottles) that we can fill with water and store I'm our school storage
facility, in cases where there might be a shortage of water in school or in the learners'
homes.
Littering - learners always litter during lunch due to not knowing how littering affects the
environment and how the rubbish can make money for them. This problem can be
solved by teaching the learners about recycling and reusing. A group of learners can be
taken around the school and instructed to pick up the litter, then place it in beans that are
categorized according to what's thrown in them (e.g papers/bottles/boxes). We would
then explain to the learners that selling bottles to recycling sites can make them money.
And you could also use some of the material to create charts and posters about caring
for our environment, that we can plug around our walls.
Air pollution - learners in the FET/Senior phase already know that air pollution is
caused by burning fossils and trees, leading to an excess of harmful gasses in the
atmosphere. Learners could be given a project to plan at least one tree each, knowing
that trees increase oxygen levels.
