My blood drips onto the carpet between the two bowls. Then, with a gasp I can’t control, I shift my hand forward, and my blood sizzles on the coals. I am selfish. I am brave” (Roth 47). Text-to-world Many cultures have coming of age ceremonies or rites of passages. With some, this might mean celebrating one’s 18th birthday in a lavish way; with others, it might require wearing bullet ant gloves to prove that one is a man. These traditions are symbolic of adulthood, and represent a separation of households; that of the parents, and that of the child. In the aforementioned scene, Beatrice has the choice to remain with her parents, but instead opts to follow her intuition and desires - things she’s been forced to suppress her whole life. This is reminiscent of how many young adults want to escape the watchful eyes of their parents in favour of personal freedom - regardless of the perceived costs. Plot The choice Beatrice makes in this scene sets the foundation for the entire story. It is representative of a shift in loyalty, as this one decision ties her to Dauntless for the rest of her life. As factions don’t mix, she is literally rejecting her former self in favour of the new “selfish” and “brave” Beatrice. These terms - selfish and brave - go on to become her philosophy. She does what she feels is right, without considering the implications her actions might have on others (evident in impulsive acts like when she disobeys direct orders, is implicated with Al, begins dating her troop leader (boss), shoots her best friend’s boyfriend, etc.). This single choice - Abnegation or Dauntless - determines who lives, and who dies. Her impulsivity and hardheadedness is ultimately what ensures her survival, and condemns many of those around her to their deaths.
