The Philippines is a breathtakingly stunning country full of wonders that never cease to amaze the tourist. Who has the advocacy to promote culture and art? Yes, I know what you're thinking. She is Miss Catriona Magnayon Gray, the Ambassador of Arts with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). The islands were a rich source of gold ore even before we were colonized. Our indigenous people's jewelry and accessories tell a lot about their sense of color, style, and beauty, and they're more than just bling. In Ayala Museum Collection, the gold artifacts are the evidence that Pre-Hispanic showed great style and flair through life and death because they were skilled craftsmen or what we call "dalubhasa ng manlilikha." Do you know where the Land of Dreamweaver is? Miss Catriona Gray's national costume was inspired and created, especially the native fabric and accessories. It is located in the province of South Cotabato. The T'boli tribe's traditional fabric, known as T'nalak, is created by handweaving patterns inspired by their dreams. Just looking to their craft makes me admire the insightful meaning and admiration of women to create a sacred T'nalak. I had the chance to visit the Silahis Arts and Artifacts when we have 2 hours vacant. We found out that their main showroom is located in Intramuros, and I, as a Lycean, am lucky to visit it. As part of Indigenous Arts, I am captivated by their clay pottery and wood carving elegance. As I was roaming around, I understand and appreciate our culture and crafts. There were lots of fine arts, cultural arts, and traditional artifacts. And I remembered in the pre-colonial period. The ethnic group made clay pottery to use in their everyday life and for burial, such as the Manunggal Jar that was found in Tabon Cave of Palawan and the Maitum Jar. Most people are intrigued by Baybayin tattoos, which are the native alphabet of the Philippines, but as culture changes, so does the language. People today do not have the opportunity and ability to learn it, and they find it difficult to write because some of the letters and characters are incomplete. People nowadays see it as serving an aesthetic function. Let’s proceed to the folk literature during the pre-colonial period – we have epic, fables, legend, riddle, proverbs, and song. I vividly remember when I was in primary school, I enjoyed riddle. The first riddle that I encountered is “nandiyan na si kaka, bubuka bukaka” and the proverbs that I love the most is “ang kaginhawaan ay nasa kasiyahan at wala sa kasaganahan” which means even if you have all the wealth in the world, it does not guarantee that you are happy because real happiness is found in the simple things that money cannot afford. It is not easy, though; you will need to attend Siliman’s writer workshop, but it will be the most rewarding experience. Some conquerors, such as Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese, were able to impose their philosophy of life, dress, language, music, faith, and even practices. It is both the product and the outcome of "colonization." The first book in Spanish Colonization was the Doctrina Christiana, Noli Me Tangere or Touch me not, and El Filibusterismo. Moreover, culture, education, language, and the printing press, such as newspapers and magazines, were introduced during American Era. The Philippine literature begins in this momentum. Because as I've said earlier there is a change in culture and people learn the English language. In the Japanese Period, this sought to redefine Philippine literature by strengthening the vernacular literature. The focus of Japanese art is about the purity and perfection of nature. Furthermore, during the Marcos administration, he has made significant contributions to the preservation of art. He established the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), and the Philippine International Convention Center, which stands as a testament to Marcos' achievements (PICC). And that is the end of our Art talk. As an IR student, learning and understanding all of this is a great training ground for future benefits. I am amazed at how art connects people’s philosophy in life and how everyone can make art. Since just doing some random line is considered as an art. And as long as there is a human, there is art –it is found anywhere and everywhere. That’s all, Daghang Salamat! Downloaded by Errol Costales (errolcostales1590@gmail.com)
