Student’s Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
Good Afternoon Class!
Wow! I love your energy”
“Good Afternoon, Ma’am!”
Before we proceed in our discussion for
today let us pray first. May I ask someone
to lead us into prayer?
(A student will lead the prayer.)
Class secretary kindly monitor the
attendance please. Who are absent
today?
“Ma’am no one is absent for today.”
Wow, a perfect attendance, very good!
Before we begin, I would like to introduce
myself, I am Diena Lyn Tagayuna, you
can call me Teacher Diena and I will be
your teacher for today’s discussion.
Okay! Before we start our discussion, I
just want to give some instruction and
rules. First, raise your hand before
speaking or leaving your seat. Second,
when someone is reciting or talking
refrain from making unnecessary noise.
For the last rule, I want you all to listen
attentively and participate. Is that okay?
“Noted ma’am”
Before we proceed to the lesson intended
for today’s class, Let’s have a recap first.
Class, If you listened to your last lesson
which was facilitated by Ms. Garcia in
which she discussed the Listening to
Different Intonation Patterns to Construct
Meaning, right?
“Yes ma’am”
Then what are the Different Intonation
Patterns to Construct Meaning?
“Ma’am, based on the discussion of Ms.
Garcia we have 3 Different Intonation
Patterns to Construct Meaning and these
are falling intonation, mixed intonation,
and rising intonation.”
Very good! I am very happy that you
listen attentively during your previous
lessons.
“Thank you ma’am”
B. Motivation
Before we start our lesson, let’s us first
have a short activity. This activity is
entitled “Who I am.”
I listed some audio from Filipino
movie/teleserye and from individual who
are on trend because of their famous
lines.
Instruction: Listen carefully and attentively
on the audio I will play and guess who is
the speaker on that audio.
Do you understand class?
“Yes, ma’am”
Okay, Let’s begin!
The teacher will play different audios.

listening.
C. Activity
Okay, before we formally discuss our
lesson for today, I will first ask a
questions.
Is listening important in our daily life?
Why?
“Ma’am, listening is important in our daily
life because it helps an individual to
develop better understanding that leads
to more meaningful relationship with
others.”
Very Good!
What do you think are the characteristics
of a good listener?
“Ma’am, I think the characteristic of a
good listener are responsible, mindful,
alert and open minded.”
Very good! All of your opinions are
correct.
D. Abstraction
Based from our activity, do you have any
guess or idea about our discussion for
today?
Very good! Point taken, today we are
going to discuss the Process of Listening,
but before that I will first discuss the
difference of listening and hearing.
“Ma’am based on the activity, I guess our
lesson for today is something related to
the importance of listening.”
Hearing is simply the act of perceiving
sound by the ear while listening is the
absorption of the meanings of words and
sentences by the brain and it has
something to do with comprehension.
Also listening requires voluntary attention
and then making sense of what is being
said.
Did you understand the distinction
between hearing and listening?
“Yes, ma’am”
Okay, now that you are already familiar
with what is listening, let us deepen more
your knowledge about listening as we are
going to discuss the process of listening.
So, listening is the first language skill
learned or mastered before somebody
learns speaking, reading, and writing.
Right?
“Yes, ma’am”
Okay! then who among you has a
“Ma’am me, Ma’am as far as I remember
background or familiar with the process of the listening process involves 5 stages
listening?
and those are receiving, understanding,
evaluating, remembering and
responding.”
Okay! Very good.
For listening to be effective and
meaningful, the process of listening
should involve the following stages.
Now let me introduce to you the first
stage on the process of listening. The first
stage is Receiving.
Can someone read the content of the first
stage for me?
“Receiving, it refers to the response
caused by sound waves, stimulating the
sensory receptors of the ear; it is physical
response.”
Thank you for reading.
Meaning when you have ears, you can
receive anything within the hearing range.
So, here receiving means hearing.
Hearing needs to be done with attention
and concentration in order to achieve
effective learning.
Let’s proceed to the second stage.
Can someone read the content of the
second stage?
Thank you for reading.
“Understanding, it is the stage at which
you learn what the speaker means “The
thoughts and emotional tone.”
The next stage is understanding or
comprehending. The listener understands
or interprets what the speaker has tried to
convey. This activity can be described as
absorbing, grasping or assimilating. This
is also the stage when the audience
determines the context and meanings of
the words they hear.
Before we proceed to the next stage. I
want to ask this question.
Why comprehension is important in
listening?
“Ma’am, it is important to comprehend
while listening in order to better
understand the message and to avoid
misunderstanding.”
Very Good! Yes because you cannot
understand what the speaker is trying to
point out if you didn’t comprehend what
he or she is saying.
The third stage is remembering.
Can someone read the definition of third
stage for me?
“In the listening process, the
remembering stage occurs as the
audience categorizes and retains the
information they’ve gathered from the
speaker for future access. The result—
memory—allows the person to record
information about people, objects, and
events for later recall. This process
happens both during and after the
speaker’s delivery.”
Thank you for reading.
So, remembering or recalling means that
the audience have not only received and
clarified a message but have also added
it to the brain’s stockpile. If the audience
do not remember what they have heard,
they are probably not effectively listener.
To make it clear, the remembering stage
of listening is when a listener either
places information into long-term memory
or forget the information presented.
Do you get what I mean?
“Yes, ma’am”
Okay, with that, let’s move on to the
fourth stage which is evaluating.
Can someone read the content of fourth
stage for me?
Thank you for reading.
“The evaluating stage of listening occurs
when a listener judges the content of the
message or the character of the speaker.
Evaluating allows the listener to form an
opinion of what they heard and, if
necessary, to begin developing a
response.”
So, the fourth stage in the listening
process is evaluating, or judging the
value of the message. On this stage the
listener will determine whether the
information spoken is well constructed or
disorganized and if it is valid or invalid.
The evaluating stage occurs most
effectively once the listener fully
understands what the speaker is trying to
say.
Are we clear with that?
“Yes, ma’am”
Okay, so let’s proceed to the last stage of
listening process.
This stage requires that the receiver
completes the process through verbal
and non-verbal feedback. Responding to
a message may take place at the end of
the communication, immediately after or
later.
Responding sometimes referred to as
feedback is the fifth and final stage of the
listening process. It’s the stage at which
you indicate your involvement. This stage
occurs when a listener provides verbal or
nonverbal feedback about the speaker or
message.
Alright, in communication it is important to
be aware on the process of listening in
order to become a good communicator
and listener.
Are we clear?
“Yes, ma’am”
E. Analysis
Okay, those are the process of listening.
Any question regarding the lesson?
“Ma’am, none!”
Okay, since none of you has a question, I
will be the one to question you.
What are the 5 stages of listening
process again?
Can you give me one from our topic a
while ago and tell me what it is all about?
“Ma’am, the understanding stage wherein
the listener comprehends what the
speaker is trying to convey.”
“Ma’am, the fourth stage which is the
evaluating stage which involves
judgements on the message of the
sender.”
“The last stage ma’am, the responding
stage wherein the listener provides verbal
and non-verbal reaction or feedback.”
Very good everyone! It seems like you
really comprehend our lesson for today.
Do you have any question or clarification? “None, ma’am”
If none, then let us now proceed to your
activity.
