Adaptive Behavior Evaluation Scale, Revised, Second Edition (ABES-R2) The ABES-R2 is a standardized instrument that profiles the obtained ratings of an individual’s independent functioning. Adaptive skills are those skills one acquires in order to adjust to daily life activities. ABES-R2 scaled scores below 7 are considered below average, while those 5 and below are considered atypical. The subscales are as follows: Communication: Assesses the ability to comprehend and express information through symbolic behaviors or non-symbolic behavior. Self-Care: Assesses the ability to independently perform toileting, eating, dressing, hygiene and grooming. Home Living: Measures skills related to functioning within a home, including clothing care, housekeeping, property maintenance, food preparation, and cooking, home safety, and daily scheduling. Social: Measures skills related to social exchanges with other individuals, recognizing and responding to situational cues, recognizing feelings, regulating one’s own behavior, controlling impulses, and conforming to conduct laws. Community Use: Measures skills related to use of community resources, including traveling in the community, grocery and general shopping at stores, purchasing or obtaining services, using public transportation, and visiting cultural places and events. Self-Direction: Measures skills related to making choices, learning and following a schedule, completing necessary or required tasks, seeking assistance when needed and resolving assertiveness and self-advocacy skills. Health and Safety: Measures skill related to the maintenance of one’s health in terms of eating, illness identification, treatment and prevention, basic first aid, physical fitness, basic safety considerations and personal habits. Functional Academics: Measure skill related to learning that have direct application to one’s life (writing, reading, basic math concepts) in terms of its effect on one’s daily life. Leisure: Measures ones’ ability to participate in leisure activities including choosing and self-initiating interests, enjoying and using home and community leisure and recreational activities with others, playing socially with others taking turns, and terminating or refusing recreational activities. Work: Measures skills related to holding part-time or full-time job or jobs in the community in terms of specific job skills, appropriate social behavior, and related work skills.
