Opener: In a recent study, around seven out of ten Americans use social media to connect with one another, engage with news content, and share information. 1. According to Pew Research, the most widely used online platforms are YouTube and Facebook. 2. Would you be able to guess what we will be discussing today? 3. The purpose of today's discussion will be to examine the origins of social media, TikTok's evolution, and Youtube's evolution. 4. The purpose of this speech is to bring you up to speed on the history and development of the most popular social media platforms: TikTok and YouTube, and how social media evolved into what we know today. 5. While working on this project, I used the Britannica website, The Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship, Pew Research, NBC News, and Datareportal. Transition: First, let’s begin with the history of social media. I. Main point one: The Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship reports that Six Degrees was the first social media platform to launch in 1997, dating back to the early days of the Internet. A. It was a precursor to social media profiles in the modern age since users could upload a profile and connect with their friends. B. Nevertheless, Myspace and Facebook didn't really explode in popularity until the mid-2000s per ABC news. C. Esteban reported that over 3.8 billion people use social media worldwide today, and there are countless social media platforms. Transition: Following our discussion of the history of social media, let's examine the evolution of TikTok. 2 II. Main point two: Pew Research Center reports that TikTok was launched in China under the name Douyin in 2016, and it quickly gained popularity as a short-form video format. A. TikTok had gone global by 2018. B. Since then, TikTok has grown to be one of the most downloaded applications worldwide, with more than 1 billion users as of 2021. C. With many companies using the app to advertise their goods and services, C. TikTok has also ushered in a new era of influencer marketing. Transition: As we move on to our final main point, let's examine Youtube's development. III. Main point three: According to the Encyclopedia Britannica and NBC years, three former PayPal employees founded YouTube in 2005 with the intention of creating a platform for private video sharing. A. YouTube gained a lot of transactions and in 2006, Google had bought the website for $1.65 billion. B. With more than 2 billion active users as of 2021, YouTube has since overtaken Google as the second most visited website worldwide. C. Additionally, YouTube has grown to be a significant source of income for content producers, with many of them making millions of dollars from sponsorships and advertising.
