Quarterly Coaching Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 Topic of Coaching: Coaching Delivered by: Tehetena Mengistu Foreign Currency Fund Management, Manager Delivered to: All Foreign Currency Fund Management Team Communicated: Through Individual Outlook address Date: 17 December 2022 Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 Since the beginning of the fiscal year 2019/20 Bank of Abyssinia has shifted its course of action towards meeting its new five year Corporate Strategy with a different set of Vision, Mission and Values. In this strategy we remember the vision being decomposed into three strategic themes that can define the broad focus of the Bank to be directed towards excellence. These three strategic themes includes Growth, Operational Excellence and Digitalization Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 From these three, Operational Excellence was defined as “. . . combines all efforts that aim to bring excellence in all endeavours of the Bank through focusing on standardisation, optimisation, convenience, efficiency, and effectiveness.” I took this particular theme as it describe more about today’s topic. Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 Operational Excellence go hand-in-hand with self-excellence. The ability to serve others depends on once competency that she/he has acquired through training, task/job rotation, conferences, simulation, coaching, mentoring, self-study and more. Moreover, BoA’s Corporate Goals and Vision are cascaded down to individual goals whereby they will be evaluated through Balanced Score Card which is a powerful tool to translate the vision of the Bank into measurable performance outcomes and drivers. I have incorporated “Improve Employee Competence” as one of my goals for the fiscal year 2022/2023. And I took the title “Coaching” as my first Coaching Approach to you. Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 What do you think of Coaching? How is it different from training and mentoring? And please don’t tell me it’s something to west time on . Here are my favourite definition of Coaching: “Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them” Sir John Whitmore “Inspiring, encouraging and challenging your team…letting people know that they do matters to you” The Practical Coach Coaching : the informal day-to-day activities a manager does in support of individual and team performance to promote continuous improvement Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 From my training that our Bank scheduled few months back on the topic of Coaching and Mentoring (Document is attached), I have learnt that Coaching is a process that: Help to us focus to “tap” into our own unseen potential; Place the “accountability” for growth and development into one’s own hands; Help people “self discover” for themselves versus provide solutions. Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 And through Coaching we can be able to: Find solutions Develop our skills Change our own behaviours Change our attitudes Access inner wisdom Build confidence Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 The table below shows WHEN TO TEACH, MENTOR OR COACH Teaching Mentoring Coaching Instructing Directive Telling Giving the answers Opening doors Making suggestions Giving advice Offering guidance Listening to understand Reflecting Paraphrasing Summarising Asking powerful questions When to use: Knowledge gap Short on time One-off task Urgent or straight-forward When to use: Career progression Learning the ropes Gaining organisational knowledge When to use: Building on what the employee already knows Enhancing behaviours Addressing motivations or commitment challenges or delivering on repeat responsibilities Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 I would like to express my intention as to why I took the liberty to sign-up for giving coaching once every quarter. It is not because I have found you to be incompetent or under performer. But rather to inspire and encourage you and me in improving our Department’s work performance, observing, giving feedback and leading to a new thinking, through actions of future looking, how and when to go about it and so on. Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 There are different ways of coaching approaches and this times and for the following coaches, I choose to perform the coaching in writing for the following reasons, It is the first time specially for me practising coaching The coaching topics are going to be those items that can be addressed for all team members. Coaching through writing can reach everyone in the team and the document can be accessible wherever possible. Time will not be an issue to call upon the whole team, or few members of the team, or one member alone. Its vital tool for documentation of the coaching session Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 In the coming coaching sessions, I will try to bring sizable topics for further narration and short summary for you. I have already picked a title under “Liquidity Management” as my topic for coaching in short summary on my next session next week. I have chosen this title as an experience sharing from other Bank’s Treasury Function. Sure enough we will have an added idea over this coaching topic. Coaching Q2-S1-22/23 Thank You
