MANUAL READING EXERCISE The extracts are taken from NAVI TRAINER 5000 (v. 530) Navigational Bridge. Chapter 1. Conning display and used purely for educational purposes. Read the extracts and mark the statements below each of the extracts as True (T) or False (F) or answer the questions: 1. The course control error threshold is set with “Off Course“ value. The deviation between the set course and actual course is monitored in this way. If “Off Course“ value is exceeded in course control mode (status indication “Autostop. ON“ lighted), “Off Course“alarm is triggered off. a) “Off Course“ value shows maximum allowable error of the course to be followed. __T__ b) The alarm is always actuated when the ship deviates from the set course. __F__ 2. In case of course changes with adjusted rate of turn and in conjunction with the adjusted rudder limitation, the following is to be taken into consideration: If – due to the rudder limitation – the adjusted rate of turn is not reached, the rudder limitation is to be extended only step by step (steps < 5 deg.), as otherwise – because of integral element of the controller – the rate of turn could be considerably exceeded. a) The rudder turn is limited to achieve proper a proper rate of turn. __F___ b) If the limits of rudder are altered fast, the rate of turn could be hogher than expected. _T__ 3. Prepared course changes are implemented in accordance with the pre-selected rate of turn. The course change maneuvre is triggered off; in this case, the previously set rate of turn is not exceeded, or it is kept to in the event o f large-scale course changes. When set courses are changed, the operator is requested to set a course by flashing of the status indication „Set“ and of the decimal point to press „Set“pushbutton. If it is not done within 15 seconds, no course change is triggered off and the old set course appears again. • If the operator does not press the pushbutton, the course change does not take place. _T__ b)The change of the course has to be performed within 15 seconds. __T_ 4.“Yawing“parameter permits the sensitivity of the course controller to be adjusted. The „yawing“ setting must be performed dependent on weather conitions. In bad weather, higher values are to be selected in order that unnecessary rudder orders might be avoided. a) Course control limits are changed using „yawing“ setting. _T___ b) If the „yawing“ setting is selected as „high“, the weather conditions are favourable. ___F_ 5. Entering/checking the values for „speed“ The course controller is adapted to the ship‘s speed with the „Speed“parameter. This input can be made manually or automatically by the LOG. A manual speed value input is made by turning the rotary knob. The basic setting is a manual input of 20 knots, and this should only be switched over to the log if the vessel is steered at considerably differing speeds (e.g. supply vessel or ferries). a) When is it advisable to use manual speed input? (2 points) ____If the vessel is steered atconsiderably different spees (e.g. supply vessel or ferries)_______________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________
