(LS6DL-DO-PSBLE/AE/LS/AS-3) In this lesson you will learn the how to install and open software programs. Application software allows you to perform tasks on the computer, for example, playing music or games and creating presentations, spreadsheets and documents. And it also controls and manages the operations of the computer. LET’S GET TO KNOW Today, the most common way to get new software is to download it from the Internet. Applications like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop can now be purchased and downloaded right to your computer. Installation (or setup) of a computer program (including device drivers and plugins), is the act of making the program ready for execution. Installation refers to the particular configuration of a software or hardware with a view to making it usable with the computer. A soft or digital copy of the piece of software program is needed to install it. There are different processes of installing a piece of software program. Because the process varies for each program and each computer, programs (including operating systems) often come with an installer, a specialized program responsible for doing whatever is needed for the installation. Installation may be part of a larger software deployment process. Republic of the Philippines Department of Education TYPES OF SOFTWARE PROGRAMS 1) Database programs- the heart of a business information system and provides file creation, data entry, update, query and reporting functions. (e.g Microsoft Excel, Web Merge, Dropbox, Mailchimp) 2) Word processors- is a device or computer program that provides for input, editing, formatting, and output of text, often with some additional features. (e.g Word Processing Software are Wordpad, MS Word, Google Docs, WPS) Word Pad Microsoft Word Google Docs WPS 3) Web browsers- It retrieves information from other parts of the web and displays it on your desktop or mobile device. (e.g Google Sheets, MS Excel) Steps on how to install a software program: The installation file will be saved to your computer in .exe format. Pronounced dot e-x-e, this is the standard extension for installation files on Windows computers. You can follow the steps below to install an application from an .exe file. 1.
