here are several different types of IQ or general mental ability tests. In general they are trying
to measure how quickly and accurately you can solve problems, to give an indication of raw
intellect.
The most complex IQ test is a series of tests that can take several hours to complete and can
have up to 16 subtests within it.
There are diagrammatic IQ tests which test your ability to spatially recognise patterns and rotate
objects and there are more general problem solving IQ tests.
General Mental Ability IQ Tests
There are general mental ability (GMA) IQ tests that measure your ability to quickly solve a
variety of different problems from verbal, to numeric to diagrammatic.
Sample and practice IQ items:
1. If Bob sold 15 apples in a working week, what is the average number of apples he sells
each day?
2. “Pig is to pork” as “Cow is to _____”:
o Lamb
o Beef
o Stew
o Cattle
3. If it takes 2 hours to drive to City A and the city is 120km away, what speed was the
vehicle travelling at?
4. If Sally sells more tickets than Betty and Betty sells more tickets than Jodie, who sells the
most if we compare Sally and Jodie?
5. The words “inclusive” and “exclusive” have:
o The same meaning
o Different meanings
o Are the opposite in meaning
6. If you have a cube which is 5m x 5m x 5m, what is the cubic metres this container would
hold?
7. The acronym RSVP originally came from the French term Répondez s’il vous plaît – True
or False?
8. “Boat is to water” therefore “Plane is to _____”
o Fly
o Sky
o Float
o Air
9. The following series of numbers contains one number that does not fit the pattern set by
the others. What number does not fit? 3, 5, 7, 11, 14, 17
10.
The word PARTICULAR is the opposite of:
o Distinct
o Vague
o Exacting
o Fussy
Answers to the above IQ Ability Test:
1. 3 – there are 5 days in a working week, so you divide 15 by 5 = 3
2. Beef – Pig is the animal pork meat comes from so what meat comes from Cows – Beef
3. 60km per hour – Take the number of kms 120 and divide by the number of hours, then
you get the kilometres per hour
4. Sally – Given Betty sells more than Jodie, and Sally sells more the Betty, therefore Sally
must sell more than Jodie
5. These words have opposite meanings
6. 125 cubic metres – to work this out you multiple each dimension of the cube by the
others. 5x5 = 25; 25*5=125
7. True
8. Air – Boats travel through the water and water goes through a boat's engine, therefore
what do planes travel through and what goes through the engine? The Air.
9. 14 does not fit, the others are prime numbers, but 14 is not.
10.
Vague. Particular generally means to be quite specific and exact about what you
want, therefore being vague would be the opposite.

How to Pass the Neuro-Psychiatric Exam
January 7, 2020 by Draven Cueva
The Neuro-Psychiatric Examination tests the mental stability, adaptability and psychological
functioning of applicants before they are being recruited into service. The purpose of the
exam is to filter applicants if they are really suitable for the uniformed services of the
government. It is one of the most decisive parts of the recruitment process in the PNP, BFP,
BJMP, BuCor and all the branches of the AFP. In fact, only 25% of the applicants pass the
Neuro-Psychiatric exam, making it the most dreaded part of the application process.
The Neuro-Psychiatric Exam is comprised of two parts- the written and the personal
interview. It includes a 35-item Aptitude (Adaptation) Test, Guilford Zimmerman
Temperament Survey, Applicant Risk Profiler, The Industrial Sentence Completion Test,
Work Environment Preference Schedule (WEPS), Hand Test, and the “Drawing”. Sounds
scary, right? Well, here are some tips and pieces of advice to help you pass this crucial part
of your application. Please read on.
6 Important Tips to Pass the Neuro-Psychiatric Exam
Are you still searching for ways on how to successfully hurdle this important part of your
application? Check these important tips on how to pass the Neuro-Psychiatric Exam like a
boss.
1. Follow instructions
In every exam, following the instructions is as important as knowing the right answer to
every question. Knowing how to follow instructions is a good indicator that you will be a
good policeman, fireman, jail officer, or a soldier as these services require utmost
compliance to instructions. When you are told to write your name in block capitals, do it
exactly as you are told.
2. Manage your time during the exam
Like what I’ve said earlier, the Aptitude or what we call the IQ test is composed of 35
questions. You have to answer all these questions in only 15 minutes. That means you only
have about two minutes to answer each item. The proctors are strict regarding the time limit
so never think that they will give you time extension. The trick is to answer the easy
questions first then go back to difficult items in case you still have time. This way, you can
maximize the time and increase your chances of completing the test.
3. Be consistent with your answers
Be mindful of your answers in every question of the exam. Always remember your answer in
a particular question because you will be asked similar and related questions in the next
following items. You have to be always consistent with your answers. Inconsistent answers
may indicate that you are untruthful and just telling lies.
4. Learn how to draw
When I say learn how to draw, it does not mean you have to be like Michaelangelo or Da
Vinci. If you are told to draw people, do not draw stick figures. Draw people with complete
parts like ears, eyes, hairs, fingers, and the likes. Draw them with happy faces. Make
evident distinctions between males and females e.g., mustache for males and long hair for
females. After that, you describe each drawing or make a story of it in 4-5 sentences. Some
of the concepts included here are tricky, and everything being drawn could mean something
to the psychologists, therefore, be careful.
5. Hone your English skills
Sometimes, the exam may include essay exercises. The purpose is to evaluate the incident
reporting skills of the applicants. Practice your English writing skills, be precise and pay
attention to the grammar rules.
6. Prepare for the interview
The final part of the exam is the one-on-one interview with a psychologist to assess how you
will present yourself under pressure. Answer all the questions with wit, consistency, and
fluency. Do not make unnecessary body and hand movements or gestures during the
interview. Be snappy and stand firm when talking. Lastly, always be humble.
To wrap it up
The neuro-psychiatric test wants to know if you have a mindset of an average person. Do
not pretend that you are an extraordinary one and just be yourself. Be consistent on your
answers, bring out the good in yourself and do not show any violence in your words. Lastly,
never leave anything unanswered. Those unanswered questions might determine the result
of the neuro-psych either you are RECOMMENDED or NOT RECOMMENDED. Good luck and
may the odds be in your favor.
The term "IQ" is an abbreviation for the term "intelligence quotient." IQ is determined by administering assessments
intended to determine a human's intelligence level. This intelligence level is expressed by a ratio of the mental age to
the chronological age. IQ tests are often used for determining the intelligence of job applicants, military applicants,
students, and others. An IQ test is generally administered by a psychologist; but, many informal IQ assessments can
be found on the Internet.
IQ Test Questions
IQ questions would be found on IQ tests. These questions are intended to assess a variety of mental abilities and
skills, and therefore cover a wide range of different types of intelligence. Below are some general examples of the
types of questions that might be found on an IQ test:

Analogies (mathematical and verbal)

Pattern driven (spatial and mathematical)

Classification

Visual

Spatial

Logical
While those are the general areas that an IQ test might examine, it is useful to see more specific questions. Here are a
few test questions that could be encountered on an IQ test:

Which number should come next in the pattern?
37, 34, 31, 28
Answer: 25, the numbers are decreasing by 3

Find the answer that best completes the analogy:
Book is to Reading as Fork is to:
a. drawing
b. writing
c. stirring
d. eating
Answer: d.

Find two words, one from each group, that are the closest in meaning:
Group A
talkative, job, ecstatic
Group B
angry, wind, loquacious
a. talkative and wind
b. job and angry
c. talkative and loquacious
d. ecstatic and angry
Answer: c. Talkative and Loquacious

Which of the following can be arranged into a 5-letter English word?
a. H R G S T
b. R I L S A
c. T O O M T
d. W Q R G S
Answer: b. rails and c. motto

What number best completes the analogy:
8:4 as 10:
a. 3
b. 7
c.24
d.5
The answer is 5 because 4 is half of 8, and 5 is half of 10.
Other types of questions could be encountered as well. These questions could be any of the following:




Questions that show pictures of dice and ask which one is different.
Questions with pictures of shapes in different positions and asked which one does not belong.
Questions with pictures of Rubik's cubes asking for you to properly sequence the pictures.
Questions with pictures of unfolded cubes with designs on each cube face asking which of the choices is the
image that the unfolded cube would be if it were folded.

Questions with pictures of unfolded shapes like rectangular prisms and pyramids asking the test taker to
identify which 3-dimensional shape the unfolded paper would be once folded.

Charts in which all boxes are filled with the numbers and the test taker is asked to identify what number is in
a missing blank.

Images of overlapping shapes and the test taker must identify which diagram does not belong.

Questions that require not only unscrambling a word but then identifying a category to which it belongs.

Questions that ask for identification of missing pieces.

An image of a series of figures requiring the test taker to determine which comes next.
The number of questions you answer correctly is then used to score the test and provide a measure of your
intelligence.
