

Key Words: Organism, movement, respiration,
sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and
nutrition, breathing, mnemonic, fungus and spores
Identify the seven characteristics common to all living things and list them
Recognise these characteristics in familiar and unfamiliar organisms
Recognise the four types of micro-organisms

Assessment:
ACTIVITIES
The students write 5 things that are living and 5 that are non-living, and explain their reasoning behind
their choices
The student is introduced to Biology as a science that studies living things
The student states the groups of living things, an classifies living things according to the number of
cells they are made of, and also according to the type of cells they are made of
 The student watches a video on “Characteristics of Living Things”, defines and explains each
characteristic of living things and copies the definitions from Complete Biology for Cambridge
Secondary 1 p 28
 The student watches a power point presentation on the Living things
 The student explains the importance of these characteristics for the survival of organisms
 The student explains the difference between respiration and breathing
 The student explains how nutrition in plants differ from that of animals
 The student explains that classifying living things according to the seven characteristics may be
incomplete, as living exhibit other characteristics, e.g. all are made of cells, homeostasis, evolve
 The student states the five parts of animals responsible for sensitivity and explain the importance of
sensitivity in organisms
 The student states the seven characteristics of living things
 The student identifies some characteristics of living things from photomicrographs, images and videos
 The student distinguishes between growth and reproduction
 The student explains the importance of movement for survival
 The student explains that unicellular organisms are micro-organisms and states the four types of
micro-organisms
