You have successfully made a meaningful connection after answering the previous activities. Now you are all set for the discussion about active voice and passive voice. Read the content thoroughly and do the activities at the end of this module. Voice doesn’t mean the sound you make when you speak. Voice refers to the form of a verb that indicates whether the subject of the sentence is doing the action or is the receiver of the action. I. Active Voice A sentence is written in active voice when the subject does the action. In other words, the subject performs the action. Take a look at the example below. Example: The dog ate the fish. The subject - dog, the verb - ate, and the object - fish. In this example, the doer of the action is the dog and the verb ate is in the active voice. Therefore, the sentence “The dog ate the fish” is in active voice. More examples: • The old father (subject) gives (verb) the money to the boy. • Carlos Bulosan (subject) revealed (verb) the reality about social discrimination in the text. • The rich man (subject) accused (verb) the poor family of stealing the spirit of his family’s food by smelling. • My brothers (subject) threw (verb) a small change in a straw hat. Grade 7- English Competency: Using Active and Passive Voice in varied contexts (EN7G-I-a-11) 8 II. Passive Voice A sentence is written in passive voice when the action is done to the subject. In other words, the subject receives the action. Take a look at the example below. Example: The fish was eaten by the dog. The verb - was eaten and the subject - fish. In this example, the action is done to the subject and the verb “was eaten” is in passive voice. More examples: • The money is given by the old father to the boy. (active verb – gives; passive verb – is given) • The reality about social discrimination was revealed by Carlos Bolusan in the text. (active verb – revealed; passive verb – was revealed) • The poor family was accused by the rich man for stealing the spirit of his family’s food by smelling. (active verb – accused; passive verb – was accused) • A small change was thrown by my brothers in the straw hat. (active verb – threw; passive verb – was thrown) When do you use active or passive voice? ✓ You use active voice usually or whenever you can. ✓ You use passive voice when: subject verb object 1. You want to make the active object more important 2. You do not know the active subject A letter was being written by Liza. My bag has been stolen. ? 3. You prefer not naming The painting was done magnificently. ? Note: We always use “by” to introduce the passive object. We use “by” only if we have to. Grade 7- English Competency: Using Active and Passive Voice in varied contexts (EN7G-I-a-11) 9 Activity 2 IDENTIFY! Directions: Identify the subject of the sentence and underline it. Identify the verb of the sentence and circle it. Then rewrite the sentence in passive form. Write your answers in your activity notebook. Example: John is building a house. Answer: John is building a house. A house is being built by John. 1. The policeman caught the burglar. 2. She is writing a story. 3. Moira sings lovely songs. 4. The guard open the gate. 5. You should respect your elders. What is the difference between these two voices? ✓ In the simplest terms, an active voice sentence is written in the form of “A does B.” For example, “John plays the piano.” ✓ A passive voice sentence is written in the form of “B is done by A.” For example, “The piano is played by John.” ✓ Both constructions are grammatically sound and correct. For emphasis, study the table and take note of the difference between active voice and passive voice. Don’t forget to do the activity that follows. Active Voice Passive Voice ➢ Is more direct ➢ Includes concrete verbs ➢ Is less direct ➢ Includes “to be” verbs (is, am, was, were, being, been) ➢ Tends to create longer sentences that are harder to understand ➢ Shows the action being performed on the subject ➢ Leaves reader unsure about who or what is performing the action (hides the doer of the action) ➢ Clearly states the action being performed by the subject ➢ Has simple, easily understood subject-verb format ➢ Concise because fewer words are needed to express action Grade 7- English Competency: Using Active and Passive Voice in varied contexts (EN7G-I-a-11) 10 How can we convert active voice to passive voice or vice versa? Sentences that are in active voice can be converted/transformed into passive voice sentences. It is generally preferred to choose an active voice for it is more forceful and direct of the two especially in academic writing. Passive voice can be effective if used sparingly and for specific purposes because it gives emphasis on the action. But in converting a sentence from active voice to passive voice, we simply make the object of the active voice the subject of the passive voice sentence. See the given examples. Active Voice Passive Voice Joey throw the ball. The ball was thrown. (by Joey) Look! They have painted the wall. Look! The wall has been painted. (by them) Activity 3 CAN YOU CONVERT ME?
