Marin, Kyle Wencee C. Ar-303 REACTION PAPER: PALM JUMEIRAH Developments on a massive scale, like the Palm Jumeirah, have their advantages. They can infuse the economy with much-needed funds by attracting tourists and giving the local government a source of revenue. Additionally, they can create employment opportunities for a wide range of individuals in industries such as hospitality, tourism, and construction. Finally, they can help expand the land area, which can be useful for building infrastructure and dealing with population growth. However, there are several drawbacks to these kinds of developments. First, they can have a notable environmental impact, specifically on coastal ecosystems and marine life. The process of land reclamation and dredging can disrupt natural currents and sediment flow, which may lead to erosion and sedimentation in other regions of the coastline. Second, these developments can displace local communities and bring about gentrification in the area, making it harder for long-time residents to afford to live there. Third, these developments can worsen the effects of climate change, such as sea-level rise and storm surges, by removing natural coastal defenses and making the area more susceptible to these impacts. In my view, the outcomes of the Palm Jumeirah development are not worth all the environmental risks and potential hazards. While this development has been beneficial to the economy and created job opportunities, we cannot disregard the cost to the environment and local communities. The environmental impact of the development, including loss of natural coastal defenses and habitat, will have lasting effects on the region. Moreover, the potential hazards associated with climate change are significant and challenging to mitigate. While the development of Palm Jumeirah may have been ambitious and forward-thinking, the price we pay is too high for future generations and the environment. Therefore, we must focus on sustainable and responsible development that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship and social equity as a society.SD
