Directions
These worksheets could be used as instruction while reading "The Last Class: The
Story of A Little Alsatian" by Alphonse Daudet or as targeted review of critical
ELA skills including determining the meaning of words using context clues, finding
the theme, identifying character traits, drawing inferences, and examining
symbolism within the story. A link to the story is included.
Each worksheet starts with a video. They are hyperlinked in each document.
For a multiple-choice, standardized type test, I use the assessment available at
www.commonlit.com to assess student's understanding of the story. This is a free
website once you register.
Originally, this was designed to review skills prior to state testing and to be used
as stations in an activity where students choose from four short stories to read. To
access the version that includes worksheets for three other fiction short stories,
you can go to: Fiction Stations.

Identifying Character
Name: _____________________
Watch the flocabulary video at your station and identify the six ways to
describe a character and put each one in a circle
Now, consider either Monsieur Hamel or Frantz to analyze . Make sure you
include what the character does, how they feel, what they say, the way they are
treated (especially if this changes through the story), and the way the author
chooses to describe the character.

Show that you did it! Underline where you explained what your character thought
and put a box around where you explained what your character did. Put a wavy line
under where you explained what your character said and put an oval around where
you described the way the character was treated. Finally, put a star before and
after where you explained the way the character was described by the author.

Drawing Inferences
Name: _____________________
Watch the video at your station and identify the two tips given to help draw
inferences.
Now, answer these questions to demonstrate your ability to make inferences
based on the text.
#1
Read this excerpts from the text:
"My children, this is the last time I shall teach you. Orders have come from Berlin to
teach nothing but German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine."
What can we infer about the reasons why German was required and not French?
How do you know? You may use other clues from the story as well.

Read this excerpts form the text:
"...Monsieur Hamel began to talk to us about the French language, saying that it
was the most beautiful language in the world, the most clear, the most
substantial..."
What can we infer about the reasons that the language is being given up and
why it pains Monsieur Hamel to stop teaching? How do you know?
