Sample Analytical Essay
Title of Essay, Centered
1 The film "Psycho" has many elements to it that makes it so horrific and these were all strategically
used to frighten and entice the audience to watch the film. Hitchcock used film conventions such as
camera angles, lighting and sound to further emphasize a mood and theme.

The camera angles in the film "Psycho" help to convey the mood and fear as Hitchcock allows the
audience to feel the same feelings of those characters who are living them. Most of the film is framed
4
through mid shot, this allowing him to reveal both he facial expressions of the characters as well as the
environment in which they are associated with. This gives the audience a clear view of the surrounding
of the character and what actually caused their fear. When there was an intense scene, such as Marion
7
driving in her car, Hitchcock would use a close up to exaggerate the emotion of the character in the
5
stressful or fearful time. An example of this camera shot is when Marion is driving away from work with
the stolen money and there is non-diegetic music and voice overs explaining what is occurring outside of
the car. The more the audience understands what is going on, and the worse the situation becomes, the
closer the camera moves by zooming into Marion's face showing the emotion of terror.

Hitchcock uses lighting in the film "Psycho" to convey the theme of good vs evil. The film, though
being shot in black and white, is still shot in low lighting and this was done to indicate the theme of good
4
vs evil. This is because the idea of evil is often associated with darkness. An example of this in the movie
is how Marion is shot in normal lighting when talking to Norman at the desk, however when the camera
pans to Norman he is shot in significantly darker lighting. This difference emphasizes the difference
between the two characters; good vs evil.
