Knowledge Organiser - Basketball Sport Specific Terminology - Types of Fouls 2 1 Basketball Court Double Dribble An illegal dribble occurs when a player ends his/her dribble by catching or causing the ball to come to rest in one or both hands and then then dribbles it again instead of passing or shooting to a teammate. 3 Travelling A violation that occurs when a player takes too many steps when dribbling the ball without bouncing it. 4 Personal Foul Irregular body contact (Defensive or Offensive foul) Technical Foul Too many players on court or lack of discipline towards referee or provoking an opposition player. 1 point (Free Throw) Game Duration – Timings - 15 min quarters (Total match). - Offensive play lasts for 24 secs. - When gaining possession, teams have 8 secs to pass half way line. - A player shall not remain in the opponents' restricted area for more than 3 consecutive seconds The passer extends their arms passing the ball to a teammate using a chest pass or bounce pass stepping into the ball and extending arms. Follow through with your shooting arm and hand. 13 Dribbling Bouncing the ball with one hand without holding it while moving. (Players cannot dribble back into their own half once they have passed the half way line. 14 Defensive Stance Player marking the opponent with the ball stays between the ball and the basket with knees and hips bent and hands up. 15 Moving without the ball 16 Pivot An action used while in possession of the ball to move in any direction while still keeping one foot in contact with the floor. 17 Lay up A move from standing going into a seat, followed by a ½ twist in upright position, landing again on seat Any basket that is scored from a shot taken from inside the three-point line during game play. 7 3 Points Any basket from a shot taken from outside the threepoint line. The shooter must have at least one foot on the floor outside of the line before taking the shot. If you are fouled as you sink a basket during game play, you will receive one bonus free throw. 6 8 9 Basketball Skills & Techniques Scoring Methods 5 Timings - Fast, agile, good ball passers – (Usually small players) Usually the best defender, good at finding space. Very versatile players with good dribbling skills. Usually the most powerful and dependent scorer close to the basket. Athletic to guard quick players. - One of not the most important tallest players. Plays near the baseline or close to the basket. Skilled at gathering rebounds and contesting shots. Players on the attacking team move to create space to receive a pass as a way to keep possession and move the ball forward.
