2. Motivation
“Very good. Thank you, Janice.”
Direction: The class will be divided into
two. Each group must identify the
correct facts about Confucius and
paste it on the board within 1
minute.
“I have here 10 strips of paper, 5 for
each group.
*the teacher gives 5 strips of paper to
each group*
Reminder: In that strips of paper that your
group has, only 3 of them are the correct
answers. So, choose wisely what you will
be pasting on the board and let’s see later
if you got anything right. The group who
will get the highest score will be given a
reward. Is that clear?”
- “Yes, Ma’am.”
“The time starts now!”
- *The students start pasting
the strips of paper on the
board.*
“Now, let’s see your answers. ”
*The answers of Group 1*
1. He integrated Yin
Yang cosmology into a
Confucian
ethical
framework.
2. He is the founder of
Confucianism
3. He is China’s most
famous
teacher,
philosopher,
and
political theorist.

1. He himself made the
Golden Rule that says:
Do not do unto others
what you would not
want others to do unto
you.
2. He is China’s most
famous

3. He is the founder of
Confucianism.
“So, Group 1 has one mistake and that is *the students starts reading*
number 1 because, the person referring to
number 1 is Dong Zhongshu. He was a
Chinese philosopher, politician, and writer
of the Han Dynasty. With that being said,
Group 2 is the winner because they all got
the correct answers. Now, read altogether
the answers of Goup 2. ”
“Alright! So, do you recognize the man in
the picture?”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
“Who is he?”
“Ma’am, I believe the man in
the picture is Confucius.”
3. Activity
“Very Good!”
“Let us have another activity again, same
group. So, I have here a quote from
Confucius that says: ‘Education is a
ceaseless process of self-realization.’
From this quote, you’ll be discussing
among your group of the best
explanation you can possibly come up.
Afterwards, you will choose a
representative to present the group’s
conclusion about the quote. Understand?
“Very well. This side will be Group 1, and
the other side will be Group 2. You only
have 10 minutes to organize your
thoughts. Start answering now.”
*after 10 minutes*
“Yes, Ma’am.”

“Group 1 representative, please present
your work.”
“Group 1 representative: Our
group come up with the
conclusion of the quote
“Education is a ceaseless
process of self-realization”. It
says here that, education is
everywhere and that, we never
stop learning. Even when we
just see things randomly in the
street and that taught us
something, that is already
education.
Education
is
everywhere, and most of the
time, we don’t need to ask
someone on something for us
to learn.”
“Thank you, Group 1. Next is Group 2.”
4. Analysis
“Group 2 representative: Our
own understanding of the
quote is that, education never
stops. Also, education comes
in many forms. Sometimes, we
don’t realize it, but education is
endless. It doesn’t stop when
we don’t go to school anymore,
or when we reach the age of 60
years old. Also, education
taught us a lot of selfrealizations more than we
knew.”
“Based on the ideas that each group - “Ma’am, despite of having
presented. What did you observe?”
the same quote, I have
observed that we have
different perceptions.”
“Why do you think so?”
- “Maybe because of our
upbringing in life that we see
and
understand
things
differently. ”

generate ideas from them; and
then we summarize all our

interpretation of it because
there’s a certain word that
made us think deeply and look
for the meaning of it before we
finally understand it along with
the meaning behind the quote.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
“With your answers, it seems that finding
the real message behind the quote that
has given to you wasn’t easy to crack. But
after minutes of
brainstorming and
sharing ideas with your group, you
managed to get the idea hidden behind
those words, right?”
5. Abstraction
“Let’s move now to our new discussion.”
“This morning we are going to discuss the “Ma’am, Confucius was a
Analects of Confucius. But first, let me ask philosopher, a scholar, a
you, what do you know about Confucius? politician, and a teacher in the
ancient Chinese state of Lu, in
what is currently the
Shandong Province in
Northeastern China. He is one
of the greatest philosopher
ever existed. The reason why I
say that is because, although
he is no longer here, his works
still remains -- his works that
greatly contributed to the
world of literature and the
world itself.”
“Very good, Jean. From this definition, no
wonder he is known as the great Chinese “Yes, Ma’am.”
philosopher, and also called The Master
by his disciples. Isn’t that right?”

“Born in 551 BC in present-day China,
Confucius is one of the most influential
thinkers to have ever lived. The
Analects are a collection of his thoughts
and conversations on a range of topics
from leadership and education to wisdom
and love. Following his death in 479 BC,
followers of Confucius wrote about
aspects of his life and teaching they felt
were important.These writings continued
the teaching of Confucian philosophy.
They were added to over the next
several centuries. The order of the
original documents has been rearranged
significantly. This anthology of quotes
from Confucius and his disciples,
important events in his life, and
descriptions of him are today called
the The Analects of Confucius or
just The Analects.”
“Now that we have a better
understanding of what The
Analects are, let’s test your ability if you
really understand the sayings in the
text.”
“What do you think is the enduring issue
from the Analects of Confucius?”
“Yes, Ms. Tan?”
“Ma’am, I think filial piety, is
discussed at some length
in The Analects. Confucius
saw a duty to one's parents
and ancestors as instrumental
in the cultivation of virtue and
as in accordance with ritual. It
is important to note that this

“Okay, you got a point.”
duty was not seen merely as a
standard social obligation that
had to be carried, however
grudgingly. Confucius makes
note that anyone can ensure
that one's parents have
enough food to eat with the
same level of attention and
care that they may pay to a
horse or pet. In dealing with
one's parents, filial duty was
expected to be carried out with
true intent and concern.
“How about, what does it mean to be “a
gentleman” chun-tzu, as defined by
Confucius, in the world today?”
“Let me hear it from the only boy in this
section, please.”
“Okay. Good.”
“Ma’am, the term chun-tzu,
like the English word for
“gentleman”, was originally
used simply to describe a
superior social class. It was
Confucius’ use of the term that
gave it a moral dimension as a
description of a particular type
of noble character and set of
attributes.”
“What is an example of practical advice
for peace and inner-strength in the
Analects?”
*silence*
“Anyone? Yes, Ms. Dillague.”
“I believe, Ma’am, that an
example of practical advice for
peace and inner-strength by
Confucius in the Analects is
making decisions led by virtue
and not by law. At one point,
the master explains that
people should not do what
they do just to follow laws and
avoid punishment.”If they led

by virtue, and uniformity
sought to be given them by
the rules of propriety, they will
have the sense of shame, and
moreover will become good.”
Meaning, if a person focuses
only on what the law says, the
person is only acting to avoid
punishment. This is not real
virtue. Following the law does
not develop a sense of shame.
It is a sense of shame that
develops virtuous behavior
when it is coupled with ritual
respect for proper
relationships.”
“Very well said, Danica.”
“Now, what do you think is the core of the
Analects of Confucius?”
“What do you think, Ms. Babon?”
“Confucius believed that the
welfare of a country depended
on the moral cultivation of its
people, beginning from the
nation's
leadership.
He
believed that individuals could
begin to cultivate an allencompassing sense of virtue
through ren and that the most
basic
step
to
cultivating ren was devotion to
one's
parents and
older
siblings. He taught that one's
individual desires do not need
to be suppressed, but that
people should be educated to
reconcile
their
desires
via rituals and forms of
propriety,

which
people could demonstrate their

respect for others and their
responsible roles in society.
Confucius taught that a ruler's
sense of virtue was his
primary prerequisite for
leadership. His primary goal in
educating his students was to
produce ethically wellcultivated men who would
carry themselves with gravity,
speak correctly, and
demonstrate consummate
integrity in all things.”
“Very good, Ms. Babon.”
“What did you realize class, with our
lesson today?”
“Yes, Ms. Santos?”
“For me, Ma’am,
while Confucius’s
philosophy is often
characterized as quite
traditional— emphasizing
piety, loyalty, respect for one’s
ancestors, and propriety in
one’s relationships—a close
reading of his thought is
surprisingly applicable to
many of our seemingly
modern dilemmas such as:
how do I find a good mentor or
coach?; why is it so hard to
stick with my goals?; and
what’s the best way to handle

“Ms. Cruz, isn’t it?”
“Yes, Ma’am. What I have
learned today is that, the role
of parents is crucial in terms of
nurturing their child because, it
is not only enough that you
feed them and clothed them.
You also have to raise them
and educate them for them to
become the individuals that
this society needs.”

group has a choice if you want to sing,
dance, make a poem, rap, etc. As long as
it shows appreciation, okay?”
“Remember: You only have 15 minutes to
plan and to practice so you may start
working now. Also, don’t forget to write
your names, your group number on a 1/4
