Lab activity 1 Introduction to the chemistry laboratory and safety 1 Common Laboratory Equipment 2 Lab Activity 1 Why is Safety so Important in a Chemistry lab? Learning Goals: After completing this laboratory exercise, you should be able to: o Identify the safety equipment in your laboratory and demonstrate the proper use of each pie of equipment o Discuss the importance of laboratory safety and rules for general laboratory safety o List guidelines for appropriate clothing and safety apparel for a laboratory setting • Explain safe handling and disposal of chemicals, including the use of chemical hazard symbols and material safety data sheets (MSDS) o Describe emergency procedures for a laboratory accident or chemical spill. BEFORE YOU BEGIN • Read the introduction that follows. • Carefully read the waiver and sign it • During Class: work on Activity 1 and 2 in groups INTRODUCTION Welcome to chemistry Lab! As you will discover through this semester, chemistry is not a collection of facts to be learned, but is a way of observing your world, collecting and testing data on those observations, and interpreting the results of those tests. In other words, chemistry is an experimental science. As chemists, we typically carry out our experiments in a laboratory. The laboratory can be an exciting and fun place to work, but it also can be a dangerous place. In this experiment, you will be introduced to important safety procedures and equipment designed to help avoid accidents and protect you from personal injuries as you work in the lab. You will also become familiar with sources of information and guidelines to follow as you work in the lab that will help ensure your safety as well as those who are working in the lab with you. 3 WORKING SAFELY IN THE LABORATORY • Never work alone in a laboratory. An instructor should always be present, and you should work with a partner if possible. • Don only the work assigned by your instructor and follow the designated experimental procedures as written or explained. • Do not engage in horseplay or rough play while in the lab. • Always wear approved eye protection. Your instructor will explain the requirements for proper eye protection for you lab. State and federal laws require that eye protection – safety glasses or safety goggles – must be always worn in the lab. Consult your instructor for policies regarding wearing contact lenses in the lab. • Always wear appropriate clothing in the laboratory. Shoes must be closed to completely cover your feet – no sandals or flip-flops. Shirts should be long enough to cover the top of your pants. Shorts are not allowed in the lab. • Wear protective clothing as appropriate for the lab. Lab aprons or lab coats may be worn to protect your boy and clothing from spills and splashes. Gloves of the appropriate type should be worn when handling dangerous or toxic chemicals. • Tie back long hair so that it does not fall into chemicals or an open flame. • Never eat or drink in the lab; and don not bring opened food containers or drinks into the lab. • Prior to the beginning of each lab, remove all loose papers from the lab bench and move all book bags and purses out of your work area to an appropriate spot away from the lab benches. • Turn off and put away all electronic devices before entering the lab. 4 5 6 Waiver READ CAREFULLY WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY In consideration of De Anza College lab activities that requires me to participate in various science experiments and the handling of various household chemicals at home, I agree as follows: I fully understand and acknowledge that; (a) risks and dangers exist in my participation in various scientific activities and use of any household equipment; (b) my participation in such activities and/or use of such equipment may result in injury or illness including but not limited to bodily injury or disease strains (c) these risks and dangers may be caused by the negligence of the owners, employees, officers, agents or contractors of De Anza College; the negligence of the participants, the negligence of others, accidents, breaches of contract, the forces of nature or other causes.
